That is why I think Jacky or Leslie's songs that sang about changing or sharing a last name are so out-dated. People are so realistic these days!

well i think it's really depending on the person... changing your last name doesn't mean you are out-dated or not

i don't think i'll change mine @.@ no matter whom i'm married to... if i do unfortunately to get married one day XD

BTW if you just take your hubby's last name you don't need to go through a "legal name change" i.e. you can take your marriage certificate as proof to change your last name. However if you want to combine your last name you will need to make that an officiall name change.

And drivers license is always the first one to be changed...

oh thanks for the tip!

Changing name is a lot of trouble.  I did a legal name change in the past to add my english name as first name in front of my chinese name (2 words). But I didn't change all my ID and documents at the same time because I would wait til they expire and then change it.

It gets annoying when you order cheques over the phone or apply credit card or do whatever the needs your name - people get used to the fact that for a name there is only 3 words (first, middle, last), so they either missed a space or missed one of the word in your name.  Then sometimes when you fill out forms, the first name field or last name field is not long enough for your name, and you have to call in to ask about what to do.

But for sure you would want to change your passport and drivers licenses first to avoid any problems. Then whenever you buy an airplane ticket you have to remember to give your full name when booking with your travel agent.

i'm actually considering adding my Eng name in front of my chinese name but seems so troublesome. However, I think there is a need to do that now because 1/2 of my gov't documents contain my full eng + chinese name, then another 1/2 of the gov't doucments do not. I still don't get how this happened.

so, how do i add/change my legal name?

i really think it's just the person's point of view when you talk abt changing last name or not some people think it's necessary while others may not think so
