Went to the Summer Night Market on Friday May 21. What a disappointment! Got there around 6:40pm and the security guard had the entrance gate closed. He said because it's the first day, the vendors were late to organize the booths. About 40 or so people had to wait till exactly 7:00pm to walk in. Meanwhile the people that drove to the parking lot from River Road were in the market already.
It's the first time all these years they didn't let people in till exactly 7:00pm.
By the time we walked there, we saw only about 65% booths were occupied. Only one vendor sells the Chinese movies. They moved the performance stage from the far back to the middle without any cover. No chair was provided to the audiences till about 7:35pm. We didn't go to the food court since we already had our dinner and were drinking our bubble tea bought from Yoham.
The last few years the vendors were lined up in a long aisle from west to east. Now they line up from north to south with about 6 vendors on each side. That means you had to walk like multiple N paths to check out the vendor. It's a very poor re-arrangement if you ask me because some sections have the ground wires covered by a wood cover, and some by sheet of carpet. It's extremely bumpy if you are pushing a baby stroller.
We were done the whole walk through in about 15 minutes. There is not really much to see.
Bought 4 DVD's for $20. The disk of Part 1 of Red Cliff got stuck at the 13 minutes mark. I will have to go back to exchange for a good copy next time I go back. What a hassle!
Perhaps more vendors will show up later on. If that's the case, I'd suggest to wait a month or so.
There is a new booth right in front of the covered stage showing off snakes!!?? What gives? The booth you can scoop up tiny fish is there. Some street performers and singers were setting up individual equipment against the fence by the food court. I guess they collect donations.
I was told the change in layout was due to a law suit filed by the original owner. Yet, the food court layout is still the same. The truck selling mini donuts was there. And the stinky washroom is still behind the covered stage. You would have guessed the original owner would sue for the layout of the food court and the washroom!
