Don't know much about 李光耀 and Singapore.  But then his statement about language is not too far off.

China knew proficiency in English in necessary for the future.  According to China's own policy and statistics, now there are more people learning English in China than in UK.

In these couple centuries, history tells us who can rule the sea means it can lead the world...

So, it is sad you are still focusing on the terrestrial distance in your point of view for countries.

US is a very special place, with both of her coasts lining between the 2 largest oceans in the world. Like Japs and other maritime countries, the "change" starts from the sea...

In US national strategy, anything happening on the sea = national interest.

Singapore, China, US... they are not separated by the oceans. Instead, their interests are bonded together.
