First of all, I guess your friend should decide what he / she means by "心理醫生" cos' there's actually no such thing. We have psychiatrists (精神科醫生), who are medical doctors and therefore can prescribe medications; we also have clinical psychologists (臨床心理學家), who have a PhD in clinical psychology and use psychological treatment to treat psychological disorders (i.e. no medications).
If he / she doesn't want medication, some psychiatrists can also perform individual psychological treatment (for depression, the treatment is usually Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Interpersonal Therapy). Moreover, if your friend goes through the hospital (e.g. VGH or Richmond Hospital), the psychiatrists can actually refer you to one of these programs run by psychologists in the hospitals. Since you go through the hospital, the services will be free.
Another way to get cheaper psychological services by psychologists is: UBC and SFU both have a clinic, run by Master's-level or PhD-level trainees in their clinical psychology programs (whose work will be supervised by registered psychologists). The services are significantly cheaper (e.g. for individual therapy, SFU charges about $10 to $40 per hour, depending on your friend's income level). |
