RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - It was standing room only Tuesday night at Richmond city council, as the public had a chance to express opinions on a proposed new open-air public market.
After hearing from a number of delegates, council decided to issue a two-year permit for the market.
Paul Cheung of Lions Communications Inc., who wants to have the market up and running this summer, was at the mic for half an hour, trying to calm fears about security and parking at the site on Vulcan Way.
Cheung reassured council he has secured 1300 parking spots.
The market has had eight successful years at the site, drawing about 30,000 visitors every weekend over the summer.
But its former operator, Raymond Cheung, pulled the plug, because of increases in rent demanded by the site's owners.
Raymond Cheung also spoke at the public hearing, saying it would be very difficult to get the event off the ground in time for the summer.
There were concerns about the time line.
The new operator told council if he didn't get the go-ahead Tuesday night, he wouldn't have been able to afford to wait until the next public meeting next month, and would have had to kill his plans for the market. |
