Richmond market operator faces challenges to open

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british ... lenges.html?ref=rss

"We are now very confident that May 30 will be the opening date," Paul Cheung told CBC News.

Meanwhile, the operator of the defunct Richmond Night Market, Raymond Cheung, told CBC that given the work to be done, there is no way the market can open by May 30.

"You're telling me you can build a signature event, the largest event in Richmond, in nine days, without experience? This is somewhat puzzling to me what Mr. Paul Cheung has been telling the public. It's not the reality here. He's just off somewhere. He doesn't know what he's doing," said Raymond Cheung.

The former market operator is also suing the new operator Paul Cheung over his plan to use the name Richmond Night Market.

Richmond city council approves new open-air market

Tuesday, May 20 - 07:40:00 PM
Erin Loxam
RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - It was standing room only Tuesday night at Richmond city council, as the public had a chance to express opinions on a proposed new open-air public market.

After hearing from a number of delegates, council decided to issue a two-year permit for the market.

Paul Cheung of Lions Communications Inc., who wants to have the market up and running this summer, was at the mic for half an hour, trying to calm fears about security and parking at the site on Vulcan Way.

Cheung reassured council he has secured 1300 parking spots.

The market has had eight successful years at the site, drawing about 30,000 visitors every weekend over the summer.

But its former operator, Raymond Cheung, pulled the plug, because of increases in rent demanded by the site's owners.

Raymond Cheung also spoke at the public hearing, saying it would be very difficult to get the event off the ground in time for the summer.

There were concerns about the time line.

The new operator told council if he didn't get the go-ahead Tuesday night, he wouldn't have been able to afford to wait until the next public meeting next month, and would have had to kill his plans for the market.

2 competing outdoor markets possible

Meanwhile, Raymond Cheung, the former operator who ran the Richmond Night Market for nearly four years before shutting down his operation in 2007 due to rising rents, said he plans to reopen his own version of the market next year.

That means the City of Richmond could have two competing outdoor markets in 2009.
