hmm... just want to talk about your point of "租一年都唔見成萬蚊"
Buying a house with mortgage is also like renting.  Just that the person is "renting money" for ownership.  Also, there is also a carrying cost to own.
All in all, i just want to point out that owning is not necessary "cheaper" than renting.  esp. with the current economy.

So in the example case, if you were to get married and need to move out, would you rather buy or rent now?

In theory, this sounds great, but it can't be further from reality.

You can't have just half an orange a day if you want a balanced diet. The veggie seems ok but sandwiches with pre-processed meat 3 meals a day, 7 days a week?

Vegetables is cheap in BC, but sometimes I can spend $10-$12 a day just on veggie and fruit.

Ask you mom how much it costs to "boil soup" for you when you come home for dinner during weekend.

I am cheap.  Simple a decent "Red carrot boils Green carrot" will run almost $20.  I grew up in the 70's, mom will give some change for breakfast.   Ham and egg bun and vita soy milk will run you almost 3 dollars at 7-11, and it will break your $200 budget.  You can say just don't eat out, but one can afford these "luxury items" in the 70's with mom and dad working in a factory.  And you can't do it with your expensive UBC degree?

Anyone care to argue otherwise.

I don't think i can live on fibbi's budget, i can easily spent $100 a week on myself in a supermarket. There are always household items to buy in supermarket like toilet paper, cleaning products, shampoo & conditioner, lotion, hair products, toothpaste, etc etc....

and even spending $100 a week, i don't expect to cook everyday and eat every meal at home.... Personally, buying/ renting cost should not exceed more than 1/3 of your income. i guess my point is, if you have to "stress" about paying your mortgage each month, then DON'T buy, just rent something cheaper (eg, basement, a single room)!
