here's my opinion on mainlanders...

Those who are able to come to Canada are either 1) well-educated; 2) very well-off; 3) worked their ass off to get here.

While majority of the ones I see are #2 (well off), they seem to be lacking in social mannerisms. Is this their fault? Well, not necessarily. You see, they've been well-off their entire life and in China, not that many people are upper class. Therefore everyone around them is lower status..therefore we see a lot of the "no manners", "rude" people here. But that's because of their upbringing. Their parents might have spoiled them and no one taught them to treat people equally, regardless of their status. So when they come over here, they might feel superior to everyone else and therefore the attitude and behavior...of course this isn't right but no one has told them so.

As for the ones that are #1 (well-educated), they are very educated but not necessary well-off. A LOT of the master and PhD students at UBC are from China. The ones I've met are nice, from lower-middle class and are very well-mannered. They've learnt that respect has to be earned because they worked hard to get to where they are now . They weren't born with a silver spoon in their mouths so they appreciate the smaller things. But when it comes to behaviours, it's hard to change one's old habits. I still see a lot of people spitting, scratching their toes in public (especially in summer with sandals). They might know it's wrong to do it in public but they don't think it's gross. It's natural to them.

As for those who are #3 (work hard), I also know a couple of families like that. They work their butt off trying to save more money. They do have enough money to survive here but they still work hard to save for a rainy day. They are also quite content with the way life is here. Work, save money, be with family, end of day. They value entertainment as a bonus but not a necessity. Also some of these families I know, they might work several menial jobs, during the weekday AND the weekend. Are they well off? Probably, but they don't show it.

actually the people I've described are in EVERY society, including HKers. But the fact is, HKers have been blessed (and spoiled) with entertainment. People in HK might work hard but they also like to enjoy eating out, going out, singing K..etc. Mainlanders might also enjoy these activities if they were exposed to them more frequently. Like the people in Guangzhou are totally different from those in Hangzhou because there's just so much more to do in Guangzhou.

just some thoughts of mine

Some incident happened last night and I think that link to the bad behavior of mainlander. I was waiting to get out of a parking lot (Chinese plaza), a gentleman stop his car and let me out (there is a huge line up behind him). Then the car behind him honk at him so loud...

Which make me remember my vacation in Guanzhou, I guess it's not the people that who want to be rude and ill manner. I remember I asked caveman's cousin who is a cop herself. Why do they have to drive like that? She said if you follow the rule, you will never able to get out.

It's a very collapsed society. When sympathies are used, people lose faith. How can people stop to help the weak, when you stop your car and try to help the bloody body on the highway; the bloody body jump on you with his gang and rob you; worst , kill you. How can you yield the other cars, when everybody honk at you when you do so?

Who to blame? I really don't know. Lately, a Australian born Chinese  convinced me slightly on my POV on mainlander. Well, I will try to tolerate their bad behavior but patience has a limit. Let's see the different.

It's not easy to manage a huge country like China; especially a lot of messes from previous leader. Communism seems to be the only way to centralize everybody in China. Yet, they also need to catch up with the economy; by catching up the economic, that somehow twist the rules of communism and turning to Capitalism.
I heard, the only way to be  a socialism, it is a necessary  route that one country need to started from communism --> Capitalism--->Socialism. However, it's easy to say but hard to achieve in reality. So far, I don't see any country had ever successfully transform into a socialism country. I see the hardship of managing this huge booming country. My tolerance is here, I just hope my fellow mainlander won't disappoint me and start realizing what they are doing is wrong.

I realize if I keep complaining about these mainlanders, I'm no different from those 憤青 who screaming about Nanking  war endlessly without contributing or find a way to progress. Well, I will try to stay calm.

所以因為咁好多香港黎既人都會同 " 大陸 " 呢個字劃清界線, 例如有鬼佬問 " are you from china? " o的香港人好鐘意答  : " no, i come from Hong Kong"...( 有個鬼佬 client 同我講既 ) ...

Ha that's so true.
Btw I think this mainly applies to new comers only. We all acts like how we were brought up to be and the majority of us are all 'programmed' to act in certain ways to serve our ego trap. Anyways, for new comers to survive they have to change and adjust sooner of later.
I believe we hongers have lots of flaws compared to the western cultural too, it's just our English is mostly better than mainlanders (for CBC / immigrants) and we can pick up the Canadian style faster, and most of all, we are fortunate enough to be from Hong Kong.

If we were born in China, how likely would we act the same way??

^ Newcomers all go to chinese populated places like richmond so they don't have to change.  They already pretend they are back in china.

It's not easy for our mentality to be 100% completely devoted to western culture.  When we gather with chinese people, we might talk about what TVB series are showing and where to sing K and stuff.  White people would be talking about which hockey/football teams are playing each other and what kind of community events there are.

I can see this is a 100% true story. I have this kind of instant 4-5 times a month. Especially, at food cout, at lift, at market place ..

CWong,
