I had mine done through the consulate, the experience is painful and frustration. First with the long waiting list for appointment, next is the amount of documents and their copies required, third is to wait tro get fingerprints done and wait about 1.5 months (by courier) to get the card and passport.

I had my appointment made in about 2 weeks (now could be longer) in mid Nov, I got my card and passport in mid Jan and I paid extra to get the shipped by courier. During the document prep process, I need to make copies of:

- first 4 pages of Canadian passport
- back/front of HK ID
- back/front of Citizenship card
- back/front of birth certificate

If you have more, bring and copy them too.

If you want to get the card done by before the deadline, I would suggest you fly back to HK and get it done there, caz I think it is kind of late to make an appointment and wait almost 2 months to get the card.

Philip, do I just phone them to make appointment or I have to show up? What documents are required? What are the fees?

I renewed mine a few years back in HK.  The appointment itself is less than an hour.  I had someone else to pick the up new card for me.  If I remember correctly, they need the name and ID card # of the person doing the pick up.

You need all the IDs you can find.

You can call them, but they probably won't answer. I think there is a form on the consulate web site to make appointment online.
