also, by 2010 carbon tax will increase to a total of $0.07X so re-redo your math

even if it is at $0.08, the $100 credit will be good for 25 fill-up or 25 x 50 = 1,250 litre of gas. Consider my car's gas consumption, it should be good for 12,500KM. Haha, I am still ahead by 2,500KM

Look at all the gas riots/demonstrations in Europe, India, America and even HK. These are not caused by any gas tax, but the 'big climate' of increase in oil price, drop in US exchange rate and inflation in general. We Canadian has been shielded by our high exchange rate and the BC's economy bloom for the last years, it is about time for us to suffer now. So welcome to the world of high inflation and stop complaining.

You still haven't plug in carbon tax value into your heat/hydro bills? you still believe that $100 is good for a year?

I mean... this policy is totally ineffective as they are trying to buy off carbon credit from normal people!! and the money didn't even go back to sustain/improve the environment.  The carbon tax is revenue-neutral.  It won't really cut off people's demand: unlike income tax, the carbon tax rate is FLAT! so it doesn't actually penalize people who abuse resources/ reward people to conserves on resources: you still pay the same rate.

Haha, I live in the City and my place is so energy efficient that I do not really need to use heat from natural gas. BC hydro is hydro electricity and is not cabon based. Besides, BC hydro supports the government and has not indicated that they will raise their rate because of the carbon tax.

The reason I can break even with just $100 is because: 1. I drive a small Honda 2. I work close to my office and 3. I live close to a big mall with almost everything I want. I do not think large SUV or people living/working outside the city can break even so easily.

fm9610,

Even if there is a mall close to your home, you will still be affected, since they have to transport all the products from elsewhere to the shopping mall.

I was not lucky: It is because I made a decision to live in the City, close to both work/shopping and therefore I can drive less. It is a decision that everyone must make in life, not only do I save gas, save on car maintenance, but I also save on ICBC insurance. Looking at all the highrises coming up around the city, I think a lot of people made the same decision like me. Actually, because of the high gas price, I think I will either bike or walk to the mall from now on. So don't complain, if you live in a big house with central heat in the country, but have to drive a big SUV/VAN an hour or more to work or shop. It is your choice.

Inflation is a global issue, look at HK, Europe and India. Everyone is complaining. Consider yourself lucky because you live in BC and inflation is still low.

Hm...two end sword....living in BC is lucky???  Hm...I don't know about that...gas price aside, just housing affordability is extremely high if you compare across the country.  For an old crappy Van special, you're looking at around 700-800k, whereas you can buy a luxury house in other parts of the country.

Oil price increase will adversely affect EVERYBODY, unless you own some oil field in the Middle East or work for an oil company in Alberta.  The BC gov't is taxing like crazy on gas price already and they have made so much from the recent gas price increase, and now they're not satisfy and they want to tax more!!! It seems like a punishment to car owners because cars here is not a luxury but more like a necessity.  Our transit system sucks and it sucks too much of our money already with below average service; it's completely not dependable.

I know people make their own choices, but some people are pushed to a dead end right now.  Lots of people drive for a living and they're the ones who are suffering the most right now.  See the bigger picture, if you're happy but everyone else  is suffering, you won't be happy for too long because you will not be the one immune to all of this; it will eventually haunt you!
