try contacting the small animal rescue~ very often they have young hamsters waiting to be adopted. and the ppl there are more experienced in hamsters so they'll tell for for sure the sexes of the hammies.
i'd say go for males. females tend to smell more (especially for syrians) during the time of the month~~

please adopt instead of buying at pet stores! animals that are adopted are usually healthier.

Why a male and a female? Are you thinking to breed them? Please don't! It would be out of your expectation and become totally out of control, and eventually you have to give away baby hamsters and then more innocent small animals will be abandoned or killed!
