VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Now that Gordon Campbell has announced he's stepping down, News1130 is looking at possible replacements for the position of the leader of the BC Liberals; some likely, some not. Even in Ottawa, the speculation started moments after Campbell's short, surprise speech yesterday.
How about Chuck Strahl for premier? The Chilliwack-Fraser Valley MP was immediately being tagged as Campbell's successor, which was apparently a shock to him. That started other rumours, some tongue-in-cheek, like Stockwell Day being spotted shopping for a new westuit.
Most pundits are ruling out anyone in Campbell's caucus, with the belief MLAs Kevin Falcon, Rich Coleman or others may be too close to the HST.
One outsider getting a lot of attention is Surrey mayor Dianne Watts, who has yet to rule out a run for BC Liberal leader. "I think it's really premature for anyone to have those discussions about leadership, and I think having those discussions with anyone takes away from the legacy that has been left by the premier."
