The line began with eight days of free rides, beginning December 11, 1985, while paid service began the next month.

TransLink's Drew Snider says that time was used to introduce the public to what was then considered revolutionary technology. "Having a driver-less automated train with nobody sitting up front, that was going to be something to be afraid of, so we needed to give people something to just allay their concerns about that."

He says SkyTrain has changed our communities and that transformation continues today. "Now we're seeing Richmond with businesses starting to look at how they can develop around the Canada Line, how parts of North Burnaby are growing because there is now rapid transit going through there, and people can live and work in an area close to transit and then be able to get off to other areas as well."

Snider says we should stay tuned for details on how TransLink plans to mark the anniversary come the new year.

anyone older the translink system?
