Be the first to Comment 0 Recommendation(s) VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - More needy families are relying on charities this year to get by, but tough economic times mean people in BC aren't giving as much to the food bank as they used to.
December's a crucial time for food banks, because it's when they take in the majority of their cash and food donations for the entire year. The Salvation Army says 60 - 70 per cent of its annual fund-raising takes place this month alone.
While many food banks say their shelves are bare, Matt says his family will still be donating this year. "We always give [the same amount] every year. My wife gives 10 per cent of her salary to food banks and charity."
The Greater Vancouver Food Bank says it has seen a 10 per cent increase in demand this year, but donations have dropped by 20 per cent.
