Shopping pro Adam Withers has been lining up early for the last 12 years, and when it comes to tips for amateurs, he says it's all about knowing what you want before you head in. "So that when you run into the store, it's not chaos, because everyone else doesn't know what they want either. Be sure to know what you're trying to get and what the price is."

He says it's all about not getting distracted. "Take the flyer and cut it all apart. Say I'm going to get these three items from this store, and these three items from that store. Run in and run out."

Withers says doing your research ahead of time is just as important. "[You] can't really ask about features. [You] should have gone before Christmas and asked all your technical questions."

He says some stores purposely stack similar items near each other, so it's best to double check what you've snatched before you head to the cashier. "It will be the same brand, but a different model with similar features, and they hope that you screw up and buy the more expensive one instead of the one that's been discounted."

And if it's your first year lining up early, he says don't worry. "You actually meet a lot of great people. You meet a lot of people sitting out in line. They're all friendly, it's kind of like waiting outside for concert tickets."

This year Withers says he'll be lined up by 3 in the morning.
