HDD are mostly killed by heat and vibration these days. The Black drives run hotter (37C+) for extra performance. If you computer case is a standard case w/o HDD cooling, it might be a problem. I am using a Coolermaster HAF X case, so heat and vibration is not an issue.
What if I tell you that I've gone through 6x Seagate 7200.12 1TB since June 2010? All of them will develop bad sectors on its own like cancer? Not to include all those 7200.11 that bricked on me from 2 years back... all, except 1 HDD in my computers are WD.
The HDD I am using now (actively):
1x Intel X25M SSD
1x WD Black 1TB
1x WD Green 1TB
1x Seagate 7200.12 1TB (RMA like 6 times)
2x WD Green 2TB (RAID 1)
2x Seagate 7200.12 500GB (RAID 1) (RMA like 2 times each, bad sectors grow)
Even at work, I no longer use Seagate even the company provides them. I always special order WD at a slightly higher cost for reliability.
Periodically you should use HDDScan from Hddguru.com to check on the SMART value on the HDDs.
