Acer adds another entrant into the tablet race

Another entrant in the tablet race, Acer Iconia Tab A500, running on the Android 3.0, also known as the Honeycomb operating system, is now available for pre-order in Canada. It comes as Apple has just released its new iPad 2 and Research in Motion its long-awaited PlayBook, and other contestants are lining up in what is becoming a crowded field. That’s good news for consumers, who are getting an increasing choice of tablets. This one from Acer has a 10.1-inch touch screen, slightly bigger than the iPad 2, and it is being released in a Wi-Fi-only version. It has a one GHz Tegra 2 mobile processor with one GB RAM, a five-megapixel camera plus a two-megapixel camera for video calls and a HDMI port. It comes with full versions of two games, Need for Speed: Shift and Let’s Golf. It has 32 GB of flash storage and a micro-SD card reader, letting you add up to 32GB cards. It weighs in at 766 grams, or 1.69 pounds, slightly heavier than the iPad 2, at 601 grams. It has an optional full-sized Bluetooth keyboard, at $70, a dock at $80 and other accessories.
