0 VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Democracy versus the economy!
The Liberal and Conservative candidates in Vancouver-Quadra are sticking very close to their leader's main priorities.
The west-side riding has gone Liberal since 1984 and Grit incumbent Joyce Murray says people tell her democracy is top of mind. "My riding is the riding of UBC. Highly-educated, very engaged people that really care about the principles and the practices of democracy."
Conservative Deborah Meredith believes it's about people's pocketbooks. "I think the real concern is having a strong economy and having a strong government to lead that economy. The Conservative program is lower taxes and less spending. I think that's resonating with Quadra voters."
The two candidates agree on one thing: it's going to be close race.
The Tory challenger is hoping an early campaign start will help secure a win. Meredith had a campaign-style sign up at 4th and Burrard since at least last September. She's pushing lower taxes and economic stability.
"We just lost in a by-election in 2008 by 151 votes," she notes. "So it shows it can be done if we can get our vote out."
Murray agrees the 2008 by-election was a squeaker. "I think that the 60 per cent-plus [voters] that Mr. Ignatieff's talking about that don't want Stephen Harper to win more seats are very clear that they need to vote Liberal or else they may get a Conservative member of Parliament."
Murray has served as BC's environment minister while Meredith has taught law at UBC for almost 30 years. |
