VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - You're going to get your say on the future of Vancouver's Northeast False Creek, and whether the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts should be torn down. The City of Vancouver is holding public meetings next Tuesday morning as part of a $300,000 study.
Councillor Geoff Meggs says the area between Yaletown and Chinatown has the potential for incredible development and green space.
"Right now Chinatown is cut off and quite isolated from the downtown core, and so is the Downtown Eastside. This area is poised for change. We turned down the casino proposal but there will be re-development coming around BC Place and Rogers Arena."
He envisions what could be done without what he calls, 'an unsightly stub of freeway.'
"Without that, we could still do the traffic arrangements and have still, in my opinion, a very beautiful city. If we can't improve the traffic arrangements, we shouldn't even begin this discussion but the engineering department is saying, 'don't worry,' there are ways if we want to go down that road."
It's not the first talk of removing the viaducts, in fact, an in-depth study has been done on the controversial topic.
Meggs wants to hear innovative ideas and says traffic issues can easily be solved.
"I encourage people to look at it this as a way to participate in planning the future of the city and not to get hung up on the traffic part. If we know what the citizens want, I know our engineering department can get it done in a very efficient way."
It could mean ending the viaducts at Main Street, tearing them down altogether, or building ramps to connect Georgia Street with Pacific Boulevard and Dunsmuir Street with Expo Boulevard.
While it was no pilot project, Meggs points out the viaducts were closed during the 2010 Winter Games with little disruption to the surrounding areas. |
