Summer sky sizzles with Spain's fireworks
A five-minute burst of fireworks that left the sky looking like it was covered in glitter drew gasps of awe from spectators at Wednesday night’s Celebration of Light fireworks show.
It was the highlight of Spain’s performance, called Odyssey, which featured music from around the world, impeccably timed with the fireworks.
“It was wonderful. They did a really good job,” said Chyrese Battaglia, of Wetaskiwin, Alta., who also watched China’s performance on Saturday.
She said she thinks Spain outshone China, with a more exciting show, and plans to make sure she sees Canada’s performance this coming Saturday as well.
Spain won the Celebration of Light festival last year, beating out Mexico and the United Kingdom for a spot in this year’s competition of past winners: China, Spain and Canada.
Battaglia, who is visiting her son in Vancouver, got to English Bay at about 5 p.m. to stake out a good viewing spot at the top of the grassy slopes.
“Hopefully it won’t be so crowded on the grass,” she said. “Last time we were further down the beach and people were really rude and pushing — this will be a perfect spot.”
Battaglia wasn’t the only person who came down early for the show.
Taryn Kuzyk, 25, and Kevin Quilichini, 29, grabbed a spot on the grass just off the beach at around 4 p.m.
They were visiting from Edmonton and brought Quilichini’s two-year-old niece to watch the sky light up.
It was Kuzyk’s first time at the festival, and Quilichini, who’s seen it before, thinks it’s definitely worth a stop.
“This is the largest offshore fireworks demonstration in the world,” Quilichini said.
“It’s rare you get a fireworks show that’s this good and long.” |
