VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - How long does it take you to get to work?
The latest national numbers are out, and according to Statistics Canada data from 2010, it now takes the average Canadian commuter 26 minutes to get to work.
For those of us in the country's biggest metropolitan areas, it takes a little longer. The Vancouver stats suggest the average is a 30-minute trip each way; that's four minutes longer than it was five years ago.
For many drivers News1130 spoke with this morning, a 30-minute trip each way would be a dream commute. One woman describes an hour to work in Vancouver from Mission, then up to two hours home in the afternoon:
"I come from Mission to Vancouver. I adjust my hours, so I start really early just so I can beat the traffic. It takes me just an hour in the morning, but going home can take me up to two hours, depending on the traffic."
Statistics Canada finds just over 80 per cent of Canadians took the car to work last year, 12 per cent took transit, and six per cent cycled or walked. The average commute by public transit takes a lot longer than it does by car.
The 2010 General Social Survey asked workers who did not use public transit if they had ever tried taking it to work. They were also asked how they rated the level of convenience of public transit. The survey found most car commuters find public transit inconvenient.
But we spoke with another commuter who would welcome the alternative. "I would love to take the SkyTrain, but I start work at 5 a.m.; There's no public transit. I live four blocks away from the SkyTrain station, and I can't use it."
In Toronto and Vancouver, the same distance by transit takes 20 minutes longer than it does by car. |
