New York Governor Resigns Amid Sex Scandal

New York Governor Resigns Amid Sex Scandal
By KHON News

He once called himself a "steamroller" against corruption.

But today, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned in disgrace.

With his wife by his side, Eliot Spitzer resigns as governor of New York.

His exit from politics comes after a federal affidavit linked him to a high-class call girl service.

Sources close to the investigation say he used the service at least eight times, and was twice under surveillance by federal agents this year.

“To every New Yorker and to all those who believed in what I tried to stand for, I sincerely apologize. I look at my time as governor with a sense of what might have been,” said New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.

The affidavit alleges Governor Spitzer met with a prostitute named 'Kristen' in Washington, D.C. last month.

The New York Times is reporting that escort's real name is Ashley Dupree.

The newspaper interviewed her.

She wouldn't say when she met Spitzer or the number of times they had seen each other.

But she did say she didn't "want to be thought of as a monster."

No charges have been filed against her.

Some are looking beyond the scandal's tawdry details to focus on the state's future.

“This is not a time to put our feet up and to look back - this is is a time to look forward and we will do that,” said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

No charges have yet been filed against Spitzer.

His attorneys are reported to be negotiating with the U.S. attorney’s office in New York to try and avoid prosecution.

The U.S. attorney says his office made no deal relating to Spitzer's resignation.

New York's Lt. Gov. David Paterson will take over as Governor on Monday.
