HOPE (NEWS1130) - A pilot who went missing while en route from Langley to Kelowna has been found dead on Coquihalla Mountain, northeast of Hope.
Lt. Trevor Reid with CFB Comox says searchers found the body of 61-year-old Rod Phillipson and his helicopter after another chopper spotted something in the trees.
"The crash scene was spotted by a civilian helicopter," he tells News1130. "It was a re-supply helicopter in the area on unrelated work. It was flying at a high altitude. It spotted something in the forest canopy."
Reid says that pilot made a radio call to the Kelowna search headquarters and a Cormorant helicopter was dispatched to the area.
Transport Canada will be at the scene trying to figure out what went wrong.
"They will have their investigators looking into it," says Reid. "The area that the helicopter went down in, was heavily forested, very mountainous terrain. Very difficult for searching. There were a lot of shadows in the area."
Phillipson took off from Langley at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. He didn’t file a flight plan but he did have a flight itinerary.
The search for Phillipson over the weekend was hampered by poor weather. |
