RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - YVR missed the boat on a golden opportunity. Emirates Airlines has chosen to fly to Seattle, giving Vancouver a miss.

The Dubai-based carrier has decided to fly direct flights into Sea-Tac in the spring despite strong bidding by YVR. The Consumers' Association's Bruce Cran says losing the contract likely cost our province a lot of jobs.

"We've lost out pretty badly here. All of those people who want to come in from that area and go on Alaska cruises will be now heading to Seattle and won't even come to Vancouver. So it's all very disappointing from a consumer point of view."

The move is the latest in an escalating battle between the UAE and the Canadian government over landing rights at Toronto's Pearson Airport. Cran says travellers are the real losers in this diplomatic spat.

"The whole thing is basically a protectionist attitude towards Air Canada and this particular instance is very galling because its flying into an area Air Canada does not serve."

The Emirates flights into Seattle will start in the spring.
