VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Vancouver Poppy Fund is taking some unusual steps to keep thieves from stealing donation boxes.

A Nanaimo man was arrested for stealing them earlier this month and six poppy pots have been taken from North Vancouver businesses.

Jim Howard with the poppy fund says it's sad that they have to do it, but the pots are now equipped with anti-theft systems. The bottom tray of the pot is attached to the countertop with a piece of wire.

"If someone grabs it and starts running, the bottom pops out. They'll get the top, they'll get some poppies but they won't get any of the cash that's in them."

He says the pots that were stolen probably weren't secured properly and adds it's too bad some people can't find another way to make a buck.

"Well obviously they think they need the bucks more than we do for our veterans and that. It's a pretty low way to go. There's lots of other ways to get money."

He's reminding people they can also send $5.00 donations by texting "POPPY" to 2-0-2-2-2.

As for poppy sales, Howard says he had 400,000 poppies and he has about 45,000 left
