Monitor Color Calibration - What a difference!!
In the past, color calibration is used by professionals who are in the printing industry. Color calibration tools used to cost over $200 and now come down to $100 or less. At the same time, LCD monitor technologies are getting more complicated; the need for calibration becomes more obvious.
The tool I used was the Spyder2Express, it is only a $100 calibration tool, but the result could be night and day. Since it works for both Mac and Windows, once someone does it and shows everyone, everyone starts to do it.

I tested the unit on our Viewsonic VW2835WM LCD, I once complained about how bright it was and color was all washed out. Once calibrated, looking at IE no longer bright, it is rather white. The calibration software was easy to use, just click your way through and it will adjust the ICM profile automatically. It also features the "before" and "after" to show the difference.
On the monitor, the color white was purple. That means the backlight is too strong and real colors were washed out. Once calibrated, white is white, and the overall color tones are more natural.
Laptops LCDs have light leakage issues, which means the backlight is too bright (common problem with all LCDs). Once calibrated, colors looks much better, especially on the Sony laptop that has XBrite on there. Macbook Pro LED based LCD looked awesome too, but not as great as the CCFL based, I guess because the contrast is lower.
Color calibration also works great when I edit photos, at least I don't have to delibrately under-expose the pictures for it to print properly.
Consider everything is LCD based, $100 is well spent because I could get the true color from the screen.
