Because the population of the shark in the water has decreased dramatically due to the high demand (mainly) in Asia, leading to massive shark slaughtering. And the way they get the fins is pretty cruel. People just cut the fin and the dumb the bodies back into the water and letting the poor fish die at the bottom of the ocean. You can look at it many different ways:
1. animals don't deserve such cruel treatment. Some of them still trying to move when the body is dumped back to the bottom of the ocean...
2. the decrease of shark population is a huge impact to the ecosystem. We are talking about 90% population decrease...
3. We simply don't get any benefit from drinking shark fin soup

I watched another documentary earlier. People are not only killing sharks during the process. They put a net into the ocean that spans 35km (I drive to richmond and it is only 15 km). There are lots of other stuffs stuck on the net when they pull it up and most of the things are dead.
Oh, and I heard that they even started killing whale shark now... wtf... I hope karma hit those bitches and have their arms and legs remove and die slowly.
If people really need to drink shark fin soup, can't they farm it? Oh, b/c a shark takes 15 years to grow so it may not be financially feasible to farm? Bunch of selfish bastards...
