well, it is a matter of timing.
When you are building big things and need it done in a short time, we need imaginary 'trades' aka currency otherwise it would take a long time move physical units of trade (millions of dollar is hard to be exchanged physically).
There is no problem if the system is kept in check. The bankers may becoming more corrupted and greedy, but the system is not broken. It's always the human component that screw things up.
