o, i wanna find out how much the len  is over-priced.

sony SAL70200G $1979
canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM $1969
nikon f2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR $1799
canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM $1329

assume all the above lens provide similar performance with same level of camera body & not comparing universal 3rd party lens

*if the len is not big rip-off, i might consider buying it. actually i knew sony is gonna rip u off right after u buy their dslr, and i just wanna figure out approx how much is it.

I really don't know how you can compare these different lenses. At most you can compare the tele-zooms within the same name on the same camera body. But different lenses on different bodies from different names... I have no clue.
And how to say a lens is "over-priced" or the company is trying to rip you off?  If you are in their camp, you don't have any choice. It's not like you can buy the NIkon 70-200 to use on your Sony because it's the cheapest out of the 3. Consumers should know what the brand offers you before buying a camera body I would say.

And I absolutely cannot live without my 70-200. :-)

b4 i bought a sony 50/1.4, i went to canon to check out their 50/1.4.
i'm not sure how to read teh spec properly,
sony is like

canon is like

guess they r pretty much the same quality.

canon sells it for $400.
sony sells it for $400.
therefore i assume there isn't a sony rip-off, and i decided to buy it. *since i kinda need it.
i think i'm wierd when i need to make decisions...lol

Why dont you go to chapter or whatever book store ..  buy some ( or at least ONE )  Photography book.

Um .. make it easlier for you to understand ... a Mustang GT500 .. is ~ 500HP ..  a Ferrari F430 Scuderia is 500HP too ..   but I can say they are the same ..


Again, Minolta 70-200 APO is a great lens, however, I guess they dont sell as near as the volume of Nikon or Canon ...  and of course, when SONY rebadge this lens, SONY is always talk about money, so SONY has rised the price to even about Canon and Nikon ..  

I won't be surprised, Canon  70-200mm IS  outsells Sony/KM one  10 to 1  or even 50 to 1 ..  therefore, SONY rather set a higher price for it .. deal to LOWER volume.

(P.S. yes, sony DSLR are LOWEST price compare to other brand, but this is marketing .. their  entry lens are cheap too, however, once you go to higher end range, they are way over price  .. but this is business, all about making money, and how many SONY DLSR users care about the ultimate quality? )

honestly buy a lens only if you have a need for it, not because your system's equivalent of that lens range is a rip off.

You can't just take the specs to compare two lenses.  Your example 50mm...all 50mm probably have similar number of elements/groups, aperture blade, etc...the most important thing here is the optical design, glass and coating!

Even comparing MTF is not enough to determine if it's a good quality glass, you can only tell the resolving power from MTF, but there are more to it than sharpness, e.g. contrast, colour, flare control, handling, build, etc  Those are all important factors when buying a lens.

I think Sony bought Minolta a long time ago?  Minolta makes good lens too, no doubt about it, but when you want to expand, Sony is definitely very limited.  If you're really into Photography, I suggest you to switch camp to either Canon/Nikon now than later.

When SB and I bought our 70-200IS ..  they were like $26xx ....     

But I guess now, they sell more ..  and NIKON is kicking their a-s now ..  so ..  Canon has to lower their price ..
