maanmo can say something and share with you my experience

first of all,  a person learns about photography, the same way the person learns other important things in life
maanmo  , for example learned important stuff from books, the way maanmo do math, the way maanmo think , all from books

maanmo  命苦,  maanmo has never met a person who can teach maanmo how to think, so everything maanmo know maanmo know it from books

however there are persons who never learned anything from books, maanmo has hit his head on the wall a thousand times  died a thousand times   in advising a person who has a master degree in science  to read a book, to learn something he should know,
but without success

so you will learn about photography the same way you learn your important skills in life
what important skills and knowledge , you have, how you acquired them?, that's most likely the way you will learn photography

so now you want to learn photography on the web?
maanmo share with you the same aspiration. maanmo hope one day, to learn brain surgery from the resources on the web
and maanmo is not joking.

as a first step to becoming a brain surgeon, maanmo bought a camera
about 5 years ago, it is a crude camera, in fact , a toy  camera
maanmo went on the web  to learn how to use this camera
there is a website for it  , lauched  at just the same time maanmo bought the jamcam
May/2003
http://www.thejamcam.com/
even today, maanmo is still the world's leading poster of photos taken by the jamcam

actually there is nothing to learn when it comes to using the jamcam
just press the button, that's all
to get photos out of jamcam,  maanmo reads  a hundred books on photoshop

how to learn photogaphy from books, and what books to choose is beyond the scope of this discussion
on this subject, maanmo has hit the head on the monitor  a thousand times to express  maanmo's opinion in this forum

however , many years ago,  when maanmo is browsing for books to help maanmo enjoy  the fujifilm digital camera,
maanmo come upon , on the shelf, many books specifically for  certain models of canon and nikon cameras

so now i search the web, for rebel xs
and maanmo hit the JACKPOT !!!!!

look at this webpage
http://www.amazon.ca/Canon-Digital-Rebel-1000D-Companion/dp/0596154526

this webpage is for a book
The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion
which maanmo has never read , and may not be the best

but  down on the page.
there is a rebel xs book for dummy

you should probably find this book in the library,  whick i think stock all dummy books

i notice the name " scott kelby "
his 2 books are worth reading...  wait a minute,  let me hit my head on the monitor, a dozen times,
thank you, for waiting...

and then there is the book by Rick Sammons
i have read Sammons's book , in that nice summer 3 years ago, after i bought  my olympus c470
sammons 's books are recommended by scott kelby,
so it has to be good and indeed it is
wait a minute i think its time to smash my head into the monitor, its so exciting talking  about books

this is a forum,  so maanmo will talk a little more.
maanmo is on this forum for so many years,, once in a while , someone shows up, and say, he has bought a camera.
and then is heard no more,

so the way to learn photography, is not just buying a camera, but posting photos,   day and day after,  year after year after year
that's the way to learn photography,  that's the way to learn brain surgery

IMHO, the 1st thing you want to do is get to know your camera (The equipment itself) in details.  What each button does, and how to change each of those setting..

Then start to read more about what each of those settings do.

You will find some functions are essential to learn, while other can wait.

eg. I have been to  many events where the person have some idea of what ISO setting does, but takes a long time to adjust it on the field.  That really has nothing to do with skills, it jus means he person isn't prepared....!

And yes, you should starting reading the basic and try out those basic such as:

- Aperture setting
- Shutter speed
- Aperture priority Mode in your camera
- Shutter priority mode in your camera
- Manual mode is good to try later
- Stop using any kind of program mode, since you can't hardly learn anything using those.. settnig
- The type of lightmeter your camera uses, and how it works, and what does it do
- Knowing how your lightmeter works, can how Aperture/shutter priority does.  You then can move on to learning how to fine tune your pictures exposure by using either exposure compensation, or manual mode where you can have full control of your aperture/shutter setting.
- If you just want practice, you can always start shooting everything in Jpg.
- Another other important piece to learn about is white balance, personally, I hardly ever use Auto WB, but again try it out, you can only learn how to make the correct setting after you know what isn't right.
- Don't mix up your learning process with your photos taking with the flashes.  When you are familiar with the basic above, you will then be able to add flash into the fomular and further develop your skills.

Obvioiusly, these are all just some techinical stuffs.., but the camera itself is just a tool, and it is difficult to capture great images consistantly unless you know how to use your tools well.

Let's talk about compostion when you post here again wth the question.

Have fun

, today we can search the web and find many answers

as i  said, i was very happy to find a website  dedicated to the use of the
great  digital camera , the jamcam

when i started posting photos  taken  by the jamcam   on a nice  forum
someone there alerted me to a  photo sharing website   by cannon usa,
that's where i posted my first collection of photos
at that time, cannon meant  printers, and not cameras to me , and i have never heard of SLR or DSLR

unfortunately, the bosses of  cannon usa   did not like what was done on the web for cannon consumers and killed the website
(  in a similar way  telus , killed  the web service that offered free voice mail and  web fax )

that is  why i never visited canon websites again
but things may have changed

here is a website  put up by cannon usa
" long time no see "
http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/con ... mp;articleTypeID=48

whereas .. maanmo sits on this forum  for 5 years.   still it does not  hurt to see how another forum  discussion  the question  of this
thread,

what we are really looking for is a person  who can package nice information on how to use  this camera
to day, for various reasons,  the package is still found in a book form...
google search "canon xs , tutorial" and found
http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/photography-beginners-forum-photo-gallery/171348-canon-rebel-xs-guide.html

this site looks very promising,  some body has the energy to put up a website with video tutorial....

the best way to learn to use a camera,
is to have  an uncle or aunt  showing you every step of the  way

maanmo  命苦, he can only read books

and of course,  there are different uncles,  good and bad,
if you only have stupid uncles, no good
same with books, you must choose the right books
for  苦命 photographer wannabe, the books of scott kelby are highly recommended
maanmo has read a ton of book s  on camera and photography after buying the cameras

if you have trouble with the camera, just remember  uncle scott kelby has been there  before , and what fun he had...
