I sent a registered mail to abroad and I was told by the mail clerk that I can call the 1800 number on the receipt to check on the status.  It has been 3 weeks and my friend has not recevied the registered mail, so I call the Canada Post 1800 number to check on the status.  The rep on the phone said, she can only tell me when the registered mail left Canada.  Their tracking system doesn't track beyond that.  That means I will not be able to find out if it arrived safely at the destination and if it was delivered.  What kind of registered mail is this!!!    I asked her what if my friend never received it, then the rep said we have to wait after 30 days, then we can do a trace, which takes 90 days.  After that, if it is lost, they will refund the postage.  If it is not something important, why would I mail it by registered mail?  Refunding the postage is no use when the important docs that is lost in the mail.

Canada Post just sucks!  Postage is so expensive and so slow!

I never use registered mail for anything for the same reason. Register mail basically adds a tracking number on regular mail, nothing else. It does not have coverage on loss or anything. For something important, I would use XpressPost or simply send by FedEx.

I rarely use CanadaPost now caz they are expensive, I ship with USPS in the state for all foreign stuff.

I wish I knew... and the mail clerk didn't even tell me to use XpressPost.  This lesson costed me US$100 as it was a bank draft for deposit for a tour to Africa!

Canada Post is always so useless. They lost my parcel and refunded the cost, then they found it 2 weeks later and charged me for the return shipping! Can't believe I need to pay to get my own stuff back!!!

if you know your destination, you can try tracking your number at the country's post office website...
let's say i sent my package to hong kong... and i can check if it has arrived hong kong by tracking it in the hong kong postal service website...
hope this helps=)

Yes, I forgot to mention that you can run the tracking number search at the destination country's post office site.

You can check the postal standard for regular mail sent to Africa, I think 3 weeks is reasonable for an unusual destination. If the clerk didn't offer XpressPost, that means CP doesn't even have it for that location.

I put my trust in courier more than CP. :-)

If it is a money order, there will be way to claim your money back with your receipt.  So don't throw that away yet.
