It's called Sudden Infant Death (SIDS)~

SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant who is younger than 1 year old. It's a frightening prospect because it can strike without warning, usually in seemingly healthy babies. Most SIDS deaths are associated with sleep (hence the common reference to "crib death") and infants who die of SIDS show no signs of suffering.

Other potential risk factors include:

•smoking, drinking, or drug use during pregnancy
•poor prenatal care
•prematurity or low birth-weight
•mothers younger than 20
•tobacco smoke exposure following birth
•overheating from excessive sleepwear and bedding
•stomach sleeping

It actually occurs more from stomach sleeping than sleeping with adults.

LP, there are many studies on SIDS, although you can still think that this is an no issue.

I think it's unsafe to keep baby in the same bed as adult. Babies are tiny and any movement from an adult could harm them. cribs are built and meant to use by babies.
I tho it's common sense....
recent death of baby in Surry could be caused by the baby rolling and got caught in between the gap of a regular bed and the wall....

wait until the day when the baby starts crawling ... you will realize how scary it is.

what do you use to confine the baby?

First  嬰兒猝死 while sleeping (SID)  is different from dying from 不安全的睡眠安排. Sakura has posted info on SID.

I remember studying something about SID at university. Something about young babies "forget" to breath when asleep ( or was it the heart stops beating? I forgot). When baby sleeps with the parent it is found that their breathing (or heart beat) becomes synchronized meaning baby's breathing (or heart beat) won't stop. Therefore sleeping with the parent does have its advantages. I remember it is suggested you can put baby in a basket and put the basket next to u will have the same effect without the danger of adult accidentally suffocating or crushing the baby. I guess if you can, put the baby crib next to parents' bed can sync too? (That I am not sure).

I am actually not worry about SID. I mean it's really hard to prevent it. I am more concern that some parents are not trying minimized chance of accident. (as you said 不安全的睡眠安排)

As much as people think that breathing is a reflex and cannot be forgotten, it can.

All babies forget to breathe at some points in their sleep and a certain part of the brain reminds them to breathe again.
Infants are prone to irregular breathing because their brains aren't fully developed yet. Sometimes this can make them breathe faster and slower (or seem like they take a sudden deep breath). This is normal for a lot of babies and will decrease in frequency with time.
It's called Sleep apnea. It's a sleeping disorder and a lot of infants actually have but very mild.
Although it's does occur more with premature babies.

"Statistics Canada shows that the chance of your baby dying for any reason before they are a year old, is only about a 0.5 percent chance. That does not even take into account the reasons for those deaths which could be numerable reasons, like SIDS, birth or heart defects, house fires, car accidents, murder, drowning, etc.

So, if you take those statistics into account, the odds of accidentally killing your baby from co sleeping, is so small it is practically immeasurable, and compared to the many benefits of co sleeping, it is down right illogical to take any experts advice against co sleeping as credible."
http://nurturedmother.ca/superaddmom/attachment-parenting/millions-of-babies-co-sleep-and-live-yearly/

So babies dying during sleep actually has nothing to do with co-sleeping.
It can happen at anytime with any babies.
Like I said before, it's more likely to happen if you put your baby to sleep tummy side down compare to co-sleeping.
Altough we put all the babies to sleep in the daycare tummy side down, but none of them had ever have problems sleeping.
I studied this topic when I was in the Early Childhood Education program.

Problem is ..  4-5 month old baby love to flip themself ... always tummy side down themself ..

And for some reason, my baby like to TILT his head up, no matter tummy side up or down ...

Haha~
They do like sleeping tummy side down which is why we put them to sleep like that in the daycare~
They do seem to fall asleep better and sleep better when they're tummy side down~

Tilting his head mite cause trouble breathing and block his airway..~
But it's a very small chance~
Do becareful tho~

Yeah ... still, as parents, we are trying out best ...

10pm, 12am, 2am, 4am, 6am, 8am  etc on and on ...  keep checking all the time ...

Not a easy job .. but lots of enjoyment! ^_^

SIDS peaks when the baby is around 2-4 months.  Most of them do not know how to roll over at this age.  Sleeping on the back is the safest position because it's least associated with SIDS.  VGH (Vancouver Women's Hospital), they all suggest newborns sleep on their backs all the time.  The Early Childhood program could be correct too because they're probably talking about babies at a different age, probably older ones, but for newborns it's very important that you follow the guidelines to prevent SIDS.  Although the chances is not high, I wouldn't take the risk at all!

The seven SIDS risk-lowering steps:

Give your baby a healthy womb environment.
Do not allow smoke around your baby ?pre or postnatally.
Put your baby to sleep on his back or side, not on his stomach.
Breastfeed your baby.
Give your baby a safe sleeping environment.
Avoid overheating your baby during sleep.
Practice the "high-touch" style of attachment parenting.

We have done all 6 of 7 steps ..

however, what is "HIGH TOUCH" ar  SB ?

High touch means more physical contact, like sakura said about syncing rythms.

I hv TONS of physical contact with my baby every day wor ..

Well, I dun doubt that you do have a lot of physical touch with ur baby~
We all should~

But think about when they were in the womb, bascially 9 months~
Everyday, every second is physical touch~
So when they r out, compare to in the womb, it's a lot less physical touch for them~
So they do need LOTS and LOTS~ lol~

High touch sounds good in theory, but in practice I think the baby should start to learn to live on it's own...too much "high touch" will cause the parents to be zombies...LOL

Well, high touch had been shown to benefit the baby’s physical development and contributes to a positive attachment relationship between the mom.

- They gain more weight and had larger increases in body length and head circumference.
- Stimulated infants had fewer illnesses and clinic visits.
- Gentle touch has been shown to facilitate physical and psychological functioning, particularly in terms of reducing stress, relieving pain, increasing the ability to cope, and general health ratings.
- Participants in a study examining the effectiveness of therapeutic touch as a treatment for managing pain due to fibromyalgia experienced a significant decrease in pain and reported a significant improvement in quality of life.

It will definitely help premature babies as well~
