anyone who is familiar with advertising laws?

last night, i got an email from hp canada about their special promotion.  wow, the printer that i want is only $150.  i tried to order it online, but hp is facing some internal problems and could not take order at that time.  when i tried to order it today, the offer changed to $150 off the original price, not on sale for $150.  i am so mad and send an email to hp to complain about it, but they haven't reply yet.

last week, i checked out telus tv, played around the package on their website.  if i transfer to telus, my monthly fee will be reduced by 1/3.  wow so happy and applied online right away.  got a call back from telus, they said the information on their website is incorrected, my package should be $53, instead of $40.  there is nothing they can do.  complained to their manager, the manager call back and said there is nothing she can do about the sport package, but she can credit my account for $2/month for six months, since the actual price for fairchild is $9 but they advised it for $7.   so mad.  i told her, what?!? $2/month for the next 6 months.  you can save the $12, which is not even good enough for a lunch.  not sure how many people were misleaded by your ad., and hope it won't damage your reputation too much.   i spent hours to check out the packages, which worth much more than $12 already.

just wonder anyone is good at advertising laws, the big corps can use  fraudulent information to attract people to check out their products?  at the end they don't need to responsible for anything.

Sorry to be very blunt, being in marketing and retail for so many years, mistakes happen. Once the retraction is out, there is no more responsibilities.

Many retailers need you to agree to their terms before you can commit to the order. The terms usually include the right to cancel/reject the order in their sole judgement.

Dell was fined by the Taiwanese government earlier because of multiple wrong pricing: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/dell-fine-taiwan-price-errors,8364.html

Both of the instances you mentioned did not cause you any financial loss. It is still your choice to do business with these companies or not. Unless the order actually went through, and they rejected it later, then you can do something about it. Otherwise, I think you should just live with it. Welcome to the age of electronic information, where things change all the time.

unless you are in Quebec, the chances of getting them to honor it is slim to none

Most of the advertising are misleading nowadays anyway.  They either put tiny words next to the big sale price or put limited stock on hand.

I still remember ... they used to put up adds about loudspeakers on the newspaper.. and the price is for a single speaker.  But they will NOT sell you a single speaker if you ask them.

well I "bought" a nice pendant online when I saw it priced at $1 once... then next day, I got the email saying it's a pricing error. And that's it.... @ @

Have you checked out their specials at the store front?

Make sure you verify the expiry date.

If you can actually find it, that is

I look up their website in the morning, and go there when they open at 9:00 am.
I'm frugal, and expect they honour their advertisement, after all, why spending
big money advertising if they cannot keep up the demand for 5-10  minutes?

Now, TnT's scheme for Mid Week special was that those fishes on sale they would not cut and clean for you.  In another word, they think they save the labor for the low price.

i think with the online stores. they have it written in their disclaimers that they cant be responsible for any "mistakes" that they make on the sites...
i remember i once bought a few computers off future shop's website cuz it was on sale for around $100 when it's worth more like 500-600... but yeah they canceled my order at the end

Ads are made months ahead of time, therefore mistakes happen. Businesses are already struggling to to survive.. obviously they will protect themselves first.

Sometimes the ad just wants to get you to go to their store and hopes you would buy something different.

if ads are made months ahead of time, why there is no time for adjustment?

Depends on the merchant, but most ads are made at least a month ahead, that will give the merchant time to revise the ad for typos, stock the products and print the ads. The time to turnaround printed ads is not overnight, it could be weeks. Since we can't foresee the future, if mistakes are made, it would be too late and too costly to reprint them. Therefore the merchants will need to print retractions in major newspapers and stores to address the problem.

It would make sense to correct them if the merchant does everything in-house, but many of these functions are outsourced, it is just impossible to co-ordinate in a short period of time. In Canada, there are only handful of companies that does ads for major retailers, so you can imagine how "busy" they could be.
