From my very vague memory, i remember as a kid when i travel back to hk with my mom, she'd tell me to go to this office in the airport and register serial # of items such as phones, cameras, and laptops...

last year when i went to the airport and did that, the person at the office told me that i dont need to cuz they aren't worth a lot?? do we still do that nowadays?? and also i'll be flying at 2am, is that office still open??

Protecting your valuables

Before travelling outside Canada with valuable items, you may wish to take advantage of a free identification service that is available at all CBSA offices. This service is available for items that have serial numbers or other unique markings. For items that do not have such markings, the CBSA can apply a sticker to them so that they can be identified for customs purposes as goods that are legally in Canada.

When you show your valuables to a border services officer and state that you acquired them in Canada or lawfully imported them, the officer will list your valuables and their serial numbers on a wallet-sized card called a Form Y38, Identification of Articles for Temporary Exportation. If you are questioned about your goods when you return to Canada, show your card to the officer. This will help identify the valuables that were in your possession before leaving the country.

One time when I tried to register they asked me for reciepts of those items otherwise they won't do it.  I was like....who in the world would bring/keep their receipts to the airport???!?!?!  Stupid customs!

Then what happened?

When i registered my items, they just asked me where and when i bought them.

If i remember correctly, the office opens 24 hrs but you need to ring the door bell.

They usually would not ask but this is for "just in case" they suspect you buy the things oversea and then you have prove.

You don't really need receipt by LAW .. ( check their website )

However, those custom are B.S...  they don't even know the rule ..  but .. what can we do??

u also can register your items in any CBSA office at the border. You can also register at BC Hydro Building in downtown vancouver too.

hope it'll be as smooth when i go next week la... wish me luck!

It depends on who you speak to.  Some officers would ask you questions like where you bought the item from and if you have receipt, but some would just sign the card without checking the items at all.

2 or 3 months ago I was flying at 6am and the door was locked and there was like nobody there. There was another guy wanting to get into the office but he said theres nobody so he just left. I just left as well and didnt register my stuff, but nobody asked anyway when I returned.

And I have done it tons of times in the past, never needed receipts.
作者: karyee    時間: 2009-11-12 00:09

never need the receipts.
i even wrote down my dad watch, that is like reallly old. also, i wrote down the cellphone that i got from hk from previous trip. they don't care or check the item on the list.

one custom told me, that green card will never expire.
ex. if you wrote your camera and laptop on the green card last yr. this trip you are bring the laptop only, you can still show the old card to the custom, no need to write a new card again.

I wonder if it can be doen online now ...

Well..  they are lazy anyway ...  so .. online DIY, will save their time ..

(Say Police, for damage or stolen item under $5,000, they won't help you anymore, but online DIY report ...  )
