Hi,

I want to buy some high end dark chocolate as a gift.
I found some online from France, but the shipping is almost as much as the product.

I try Thomas Hass (spelling?), they don't look good enough.

here is an example:
http://www.richart-chocolates.com/b2c/chocolate/products/410

Price range between $40 to $80, any suggestion?

You mean you had dark chocolate from Thomas Haas and you didn't like how they taste??
They have a W. broadway location now.

For French chocolate, I had la maison du chocolat when I was in NYC. And it was really good. Not sure if your friend likes it or not. (prob expensive shipping..etc)
www.lamaisonduchocolat.com

For hand crafted chocolate, there is also:
Chocolaterie de la Nouvelle France on E 21st. (near Main)
It's by a girl from Montreal.
mentioned in some online site:

The la maison is surely expensive to deliver.
I will check out Chocolaterie de la Nouvelle France for sure.

Thanks.

More suggestions are appreciated.

Mink Chocolates in downtown
Love their mint chocolate beverage

Chcoatl in yaletown, Bill Gates' favorite hot chocolate/

"...most famously by Bill Gates, when he said that Chocoatl’s hot chocolate was the best he had ever tasted."

but haven't seen Chcoatl opening when I walked by for the last few times...not sure are they closed temporarily or something.

Thanks, looks like mink is in my price range.  I can get a $42 gift set + some other stuff.

How's the quality of the choco, I am not really a choco person, but my friend is.

I haven't tried the ice wine truffle myself, suppose to be made with Canadian ice wine.

I personally prefer Lindt over Godiva

Agree!
But I prefer chocolate from smaller local shops. Freshness is also an important factor for chocolate.

You were talking about the chocolate confectionery (fabricated  product i.e. truffles) while I care more about the  raw ingredients.
The hand-crafted pralines can  be done  in small scale while the blocks of Extra Bittersweet Couverture has to be manufactured
in huge facilities. I don't think Lindt has boutique in Vancouver.

Where can I buy Lindt?
And which product do you prefer for dark choco?

Shipping from switz + custom charge + brokerage is pretty insane.

Found it.

I do chocolate classes, I've made Grand Piano and Christmas Village in chocolate.
I use Lindt  Excellence, Extra Bitter,  Cocoa Barry Extra Bitter, Tanzanie, Vahrhona , Guittard 72%, Schaffenberger depends
on the nature of the product I work on.  I buy most of the supplies from wholesale.

I don't like Green & Blacks Organic, actually all the organic chocolate
I tried do not measure up to Lindt.
Green & Black is quite expensive, I think the Baker's Xtra bitter is way
over the top, $5 for 170 gm , plain silly, It is not even worth to eat.

The Japaneses have done anything you can imagine or can't imagine.
Fortunately, only the crazy ones do that.
