Tipping

in a so-so restaurant where food quality/service is average and you have nothing really to tip for,...do you guys tip before or after tax?

the tax that is added to the bill 'supposedly' doesn't go to the restaurant as it is tax money
so should we tip before tax?

remember this is just a regular restaurant, not fancy service or decor etc

I always tip after tax

I usually tip 15% before tax. If the service was good then I tip more or use the after tax to calculate tip.
If there is minimal or no service, then I tip 10%. (those prob before and after tax total is similar..  e.g. a wonton noodle soup or a pho)
If it's bad, I will prob still tip 10% but try to put comment on the card or never go back.
You have to get me really really mad to not tip 10%.

i usually do 10..if its gd then 15

after tax, and add 10 %?
normal?~~~

For lofans, 15-20% before tax is normal.
it is no point to tip on taxes, I think 15% tip on food and service is reasonable,
but for wine? what do the servers  do other than uncorking and pouring
your wine?

Isn't carry out fairly good service with equivalent food quality (based on their price range) a basic standard? I don't usually over tip them, unless they're doing surprisingly well to impress me. Depends on the "culture" of different cuisine, tip from 10% to 15% before tax is my normal practice.

the tips do not go all to the waiters for some restaurant.

I would tip more if they do something to impress me.

I usually tip based on the amount before tax.

15% if nothing wrong, and I feel comfortable.
15 to 20% if something makes me happy.
10% if no smile on the face.

All after tax.

usually after tax 10%
I totally agree with purpleheart, waiter job is tough

They have freedom to choose the job. If they think being a server is a tough job, they can choose some other jobs. We tip them not because of their job nature is tough, but depends on how good or bad their actual service is. Garbage guy is a tough job too, do we tip them all because of "their job is a tough job"?
(sorry to be mean)

It's a sad North American thing... Waiters and waitresses here mostly get paid very little and they based a lot of their income on tipping.
It's very diff in Europe and thus tipping isn't really needed if you dine at restaurants in most western European countries.
This is just how the industry here runs...

Yes, true.
Another example- Japan. See how sincere and professional they serve customers (even pretend to do so), but never ask for any tip. (not accepting tip is their normal practice) Is their job less tough than other countries? I don't think so.

Well, at least the servers are entitled to minimum pay plus benefit in Canada.
Many states south of the border the servers get only $600 -$1000 base salary, they have to rely on tip.
Try to tip less they will chase you for it.
In Europe, waiter is a  respectful profession and they treat their job as lifetime career.   I tend to tip more at the high end dining venues because
they would really try hard to make your dining an memorable experience while most of the Chinese restaurant waiters just see it as
a temporary job, never bother to upgrade themselves since the tips are pooled, nobody bother  to do extra work.

Just curious, after the HST is imposed, will you still give out much tips as now?

I'll dine in my house instead of dinning out.

It is true that the restaurant biz is declining, but on the other side
the  supermarkets and cooking schools are doing very well.
Does it tell you something?

Once I dined out with a group of 10 people, the restaurant charged us $15 for rice,
I  complained to  the manager since we did not order any rice at all.

Once I went for Pho with my wife, they added 10% surcharge on my bill, then GST on top, almost
$19 for 2 bowls of  lousy  Pho. before tip.
And the guy did not even ring it in on the cash register: just NS (No Sales) and money in his pocket.

The government might as well legalize all  the pots and  dope, then
collect HST on them, a huge revenue
