其實新車唔係唔好, 之不過新車愈來愈多花巧野, 冇以前咁直接, 舉例就好似而家既電子油門~~~

I like my old cars. I drove for more than 15 years. For the first 10+ years, no serious problem even if I did not do maintenance regularly.

I already had problem with my new car but I was glad it was still covered in warranty.

It is a yes or no question ..

For technology, feature, safety, speed, efficiency, space, technology etc etc .. new cars are by far better ...

However, I have to say old cars have much better design, since back then, car manufactory designed car to what they wanted ...  but now, they designed to fit the market/safety, and cost.

Look at new BENZ for example, great great car on paper, and they are so much cheaper now, when everything is more expensive, however, their fit and finish is not even close to the MB from the 80's or 90's ...

Also, look at Toyota, Mr2, Supra, etc, damn good looking car back then, and they were cheap ... now?  they all look so damn "C9" .. but a Camry has more power then a Mr 2 turbo, but their quality is also by far not as good.

Ferrari/Porsche/Lambo etc .. are faster and faster ...  better and better handling .. and they are great looking too, however, people still love the GTO/993/Contach style a lots.

如果有得選擇嘅話，我都情願要新車，始終唔知上一手個人點喳架車，又唔知架車有冇意外。小嘅accident ICBC 都冇record 啦。

If I was to buy a car, I would prefer a new car because I do not know how the last owner or even owner before that treated the car or any hidden thing that the seller did not tell us.

the part that bothers me is that the newly designed cars are having as many service calls as the old ones. so in the past 10-20 years there is no improvement in the reliability department. or are they just designed to fail as part of the revenue model???

I don't need a faster car. i need a safer, fuel efficient and more reliable car. (for the sake of the planet!!!)

As far as technology, reliability, and safety are concerned, of course the newer cars are dramatically better la. It's true that a lot of the electronic gadgets are sometimes problematic, but for the most part, as long as you don't try anything bleeding edge or fancy / luxurious, then you have very little to worry about. (So no BMW for me la~

)

But as far as looks are concern, older cars generally look significantly prettier. All these blunt nose, slit-like windows / tiny greenhouse, super high belt line designs look like shxt, man!

If you ask me, I'll tell you to look for a 1-2 year old car because you can save a lot of money and if you're lucky it's not much different than a new car.

I think the question is .. cars now, (say 2001 - 2010 model)

vs Older "classic" from the 70's or 80's.

And SB, I agree with you .. U can buy a ~ 2 yr old Hummer H2 for under $30K now, when they were $90K new ...

myversa: that's why it's hard to find an used car, but not everyone can afford a new car so when it comes to a point one really needs an used car, there are still certain things can be checked out and make sure it's still worth to keep; if anything wrong, good luck to the new owner!

Lik: I dun think new car is as reliable as old car. Safety maybe yes but personally I'm not a believer of SRS system. Simply what you have mention those electronic gadgets are sometimes problematic, that's already a good said...

but overall i think a car reliable or not is all depending on how it was maintained. such like this new car I found I am sure the prev owner maintained it well but i still have to go thru all the basic and see if it's really worth me to keep it...

well i am not quite comparing to cars that is back in the 70s to 80s...but more like mid to late 90s and is still common on the street (there are still some of them in pretty good shape)...

of course, if one has a 88 car that is over 20 years old and is still in good shape, i will never think he will consider selling it

sb: yes or no, a lot of ppl are kinda rich and they are able to afford changing cars every 2 years or so...and those ppl generally never break in the engine properly / maintain it at all...i wouldn't want to buy my friend's X5 as she always put in 87 while 91 is recommended and the car would stall because of no reason ~ ended up wrong gas related, as soon as she switched back to 91 it never happened again...

also some cars could have involved in accidents...even tho they are rich, but who will buy a $90k new hummer and sell it out in 3 years and get only $30k back? i guess everyone would if that car has been a headache?!

Well, 字典Gor, as far as reliability is concerned, it depends on how you look at it la. For Japanese cars, esp with Toyota and Honda, their overall built quality (and as a result, reliability) has certainly gone downhill big time. Corollas and Camrys and Civics and Accords were much better built back in the 90's than they are now. At the time, these cars had the major and inter-related benefits of the extremely favourable USD to Yen exchange rate (it benefited the Japanese), a large degree of over-engineered design, the vastly superior Japanese built quality / craftsmanship / attention to detail. But because of rapid expansion (leading to QC problems), highly competitive markets, and razor thin margins, cost cutting became inevitable, and Japanese reliability has gone downhill a bit.

But at the same time, domestic and European reliability improved as well, as long as you stick to the basics and don't try anything too fancy. The latest offerings from GM and Ford have been excellent and a night and day difference compared to their POS predecessors from the 90s; Jaguar is no longer the electrical nightmare they once were. And even when it comes to exotics, Lamborghini improved tremendously as a result of its German parents. Overall (taking the industry as a whole), I would say that a basic car is still more reliable than their older cousins because of the technological improvements ge.

But in the styling department, we really need to fire everyone that has been polluted by Chris Bangle's poisonous influence la...

我諗你買rebuild車可能要驚, 買二手車冇大撞過就算係死, 都係自然死/病死, 都唔會有幾多鬼古既???

買新車你都難保原廠整你架車果個人因工而死, 運送過程接觸過既人, dealer既人 etc...驚得幾多丫...

不過真係好多買二手車比人呃既故事? 上個禮拜我師傅打比我話佢個朋友係Lougheed定broadway d 細車行買左架二手車三個禮拜就死左副engine, 有冇得嘈? 一睇張contract warranty果欄竟然係空既, 返去問當然係冇

friend: 又話有三十日保養?
dealer: 係就係, 不過人為既唔包?
friend: huh 咩人為? 咩都冇做過喎
dealer: 就係因為你咩都冇做過
friend: huh? 你又話咩都唔駛做, check好晒可以放心渣?
dealer: 係呀, 所以一定唔會有問題, 有既, 都係你做成既
friend: 咁都得? 咁點算? 我間車房話要換engine喎
dealer: 都似喇, 咁你一係整, 一係同我地出過架, 扣三千同你收番架車?
friend: huh? 整都係二千點解要扣三千?
dealer: 因為架車唔渣得, 點知你個波箱會唔會比你整壞埋, 扣三千好抵, 好過你整完engine又要整波箱?!

激到我師傅個朋友差唔多嘖血, 佢差少少比人呃左換過架, 我地問多佢兩問, 佢問人地多兩問, 終於先知又係另一個局...

另一個係我個friend買左一架rebuild車, 不過佢呢個車係某大公司有上門驗車服務幫佢驗既, 個report無稜兩可, 話有做compression check但又冇reading, 架車好明顯有漏油比人洗到乾乾淨淨佢又唔同人講, 定我個買左先發覺架車百病纏身, 一查之下發覺原來係rebuild車 (都好多年前, 返去嘈完佢地講"驗果刻係冇事架喎"...咁當中既野我唔可以肯定不過佢係一個朋友介紹過來, 我睇完佢先會去 find out架車既history, 之前佢去過一次dealer service, dealer乜都冇講只係話佢漏油....

再多既都仲有, 好似我曾經幫一位朋友搵二手車, 我諗佢果陣時都搵到差唔多想死, 一堆問題講完叫佢自己諗...lol...

2002 and now same thing la, not much difference. However, cars today are designed so efficiently it takes more effort to extract the extra hp.

For me, I would only consider new car. Just because I know I don't have to worry about unexpected costs. Yes, I understand I have to pay a premium over used or slightly used car, but at the end of the day, it's for the peace of mind.

Other option I would consider is dealer demo or last year's model, which have less than... say, 2000km.

Still, daily driving ... newer car is better ..

If money is no issue, get a new 911 for daily driving, 599 for weekend...

F40/959 or 288 (old car) for collect ...

IMHO a well-maintained used car of less than 10 yrs old would be a good buy. New car, unless you are going to keep it for over 10yrs (then the depreciation will even out eventually), otherwise, it's a major investment.

Personally, I would NEVER buy a dealer demo (no matter how low the km is unless it's less than 200km. i.e. show room only car)
We all test drove before.... we know HOW we test drive...

I rather buy a well maintained used car.

各有各好啦。new car has new techs, better safety option and design, but parts and maintenance labor are high, (most the new car engine are cover up, only open up already extra time there), save on gas, but more power. old car easy on maintenance, easy to modify to your style car, cheaper for parts (at less more easy to find aftermark parts).

w/o the cash i would go for used car from the big dealers.
You will never want a used car from ebay / online from a stranger.

IMHO mileage doesn't mean much. Example: a low mileage accord that gets the old lady to the church during Sundays may have accumulated obsecene low mileage through the years, but will I buy it? Hexk no! Not being able to bring the engine to the full operational temp to chase away the moisture accumulated means that the cylinder wall may becomes pitted as a result.

IMHO a used car inspection can say a lot about the honesty of the owner, and /or how well the vehicle is being used. A well-cared for vehicle should be in decent mechanical condition, require very little $$ to fix up minor issues before it becomes fully road-worthy (my subjective definition, YMMV). I've seen far too many neglected 2nd or 3rd owner vehicles that are belching smokes even though it clocked 85k kms or less, or perhaps only <5yrs old. To me, that's a bad deal even though the mileage maybe low.

Q.

BTW: I know 字典仔 and the others on this board fairly well (was a mech before). So, to me, inspecting a used car's mech condition posed no challenge to me.
