Kudos to Google for exercising corporate responsibility. Just goes to show that money isn't everything in this world, even when it comes to business.

Of course, I'm sure the fact that Google couldn't crack the stranglehold Baidu has on the Chinese market has something to do with this as well.

I can hardly believe this news is true. Does anyone have the same news from other source or google itself?

It is becasue I don't believe Google will give up its business in China for the sake of 中國維權人士. It is a public company and the benefits of its shareholders is the first priority but not the 中國維權人士.

Thanks for sharing. I cannot understand why Google wants to make this issue public before it makes a decision and it is still going to talk (negotiate) with the Chinese government. Is its purpose to put pressure on the Chinese government publicly so that it can have more power in the negotiation?

I don't think this tactic will work and it could instead put Google in a more difficult situation in my opinion. I don't think the Chinese government will back down on this especially after making this issue public.

I should add that even though Google appears to be exercising its corporate conscious in this particular incident, they are far from the righteous image that they are trying to project. The Google (digital) Books project, in particular, ran into some major oppositions in Europe and in China. And especially in China, Google had to drop their scanned copies of tons of Chinese books and issue a public apology because of infringement and copyright issues. The last I read about this, some Mainland Chinese writers guild / association was looking to sue Google for damages as well.

This is certainly yet another setback for the Big G, but I dunno if it is enough cause or even a significant enough factor that adds to their Chinese market withdrawal plans.

Google is just bluffing here. They all know that Chinese people can just install a VPN software or something like that to allow them to surf any websites censored by the firewall.
So google is embarrassing themselves here. They are either adimitting they were wrong to censor certain searches before, or they are wrong now by removing those censor, LOL.
作者: daimo    時間: 2010-1-13 11:46

the whole fuzz is just to get Google some edge in terms of market differentiation compared to Baidu.

Their goal? if you go to google you can search for something Baidu can't.  (e.g. porn)

internet/computer spying activities happen all the time between all countries.  give me a break ...

now don't tell me they don't want to sell the Google phone in China ...

Yeah, I forgot about this.  I would like to see whether they had considered this.

Anyhow, I just couldn't understand why it would make it public without any particular purpose. To me, it seems to be a foolish move unless it has a very smart move after this.

I am even wondering whether the Google blog had been hecked and the article is posted by a hecker.

內幕交易 happens in every company.  You think people would actually be penalized for it?
The claim itself sounds unlikely but 內幕交易 is fact of life.

China censors whatever it wants, whether Google has a entity in China or not is besides the point. However Google has a duty to safeguard its employees in China from arrest, harrassment which is hard to do without firm guidelines and even then there's no guarantee China will play by the rules. You'll never know when the next hackers mass attack will hit you.

Google had put itself in a losing position right from the beginning and that is why I couldn't understand why it would do that.

No wonder it had been strugling in China. It will continue to strugle in my opinion. It has not found a way to do business in China.
