MBA is so popular right now, but they are aslo not safe from layoff as well.

Furthermore, they ususally don't have concentrations (some do, but it's called MBA in science).

so for spending that much money and time, do you think MBA worth the price?

You might feel that way, but it sums up the whole situation pretty well.

If you are good, you are good regardless. However, an MBA degree can and does push you up a little bit, so if you can use it a stepping stone, then it makes sense for you to do it.

If you are unemployed or not in management already, and expect that you can move on to be a senior manager right out of school, then dream on.

Most of my friends who got their MBA know exactly what they want to do after their degree.
One did it in HK cos she wanted to move back and since she lived here almost all her life that MBA degree allow her to establish her network in HK. She even started a business in HK with some of her classmates and sold that afterwards (with profit). She is running a few business in HK now.
Another one wants to switch from Engineering (technical) to Finance. Doing his MBA allowed him to move to a different field. I think he is doing pretty good now. And he did it at a "brandname" university. So that also helped him to be recongized as well.
Have other examples too but don't want to list too many here.

no way that anyone can be "safe from layoff" just by getting some degree or education.

If your purpose of getting an MBA is purely in terms of helping you to move up the career ladder, you HAVE to do it at the top US university or top MBA program otherwise, it won't help at all. You will be better off by getting professional certification (e.g. PMP) instead of MBA.

agree, it is not like you get MBA and try to get something with it, it is more like you want something and you get the MBA to help you get it.

First about, I am not a piece of Shxt. Thank you.

However, I am using MBA as a stepping stone to stay in another country....so hopefully I could find a job there and move out of Canada.

Well, I don't like business and I know my current education would not grant me any job oversea, except busboy or construction.

Hence, I just want to see what are people point of view about MBA.

That is funny because I am under the impression that no one is referring to anyone in this thread as "shvt". It was an analogy, plain and simple.

Also what is your GPA and GMAT score? What tier of business schools do you think you can get in?

I have not decided which sector of MBA I want to be in because the tuition fee is very expensive, as I cannot afford it for now.

However, I realize that most of the Asian university have a low ranking in the MBA list.

haha...it sounds like u r just taking mba to golden wrap urself like a lot of others...the degree will be very tough if you dun hv a good foundation...i think it will be better to get a certifcate that can meet the requirement of the work u r looking for instead

Hong Kong UST Business School ranks one of the top 10 MBA programs globally.

Don't worry about tuition, if you are good, it is easy to get grant once you get into the program.

Although an MBA degree is no guarantee for you to be spared from being layoff, but it gives you a better fighting chance, should you get layoff, to get the next job.

Actually money is the least of your problem, as you can find scholarship or apply for a loan, time is a bigger factor whether you can afford it or not.

I think more degrees don't hurt, it simply makes you more "employable" on resume. Just like today, a bachalor is pretty much a prerequisite for employers as they are everywhere.

I will be taking MBA within a few years because I want to move up into executive levels eventually. Without MBA, it is just very tough (unless you are the boss).
