In your opinion, which restaurant still pays attention to details, and cooks with heart?

Hard to find..

Vancouver's restaurants quality is going down hill....
作者: chowB    時間: 2010-3-28 11:15

Are there any other places except Vancouver you'll find restaurants with hearts? How about other type of business?
作者: ACC-HE    時間: 2010-3-28 11:22

CRU's been around for a while. I went a few years ago and they were pretty good.
one of my friends didn't like it for some reason and I think that's why I haven't been back for such a long time.
作者: 布小熊    時間: 2010-3-28 19:40

sadly most of the "have heart" restaurants that I like are GONE...
Most of those owners are the chef as well.
I guess those chefs have too much heart and not a enough business mind set.
So they are all gone... to name a few, the OLD FigMint (don't go now! It's not the same), Chow, Bis Moreno, old gastropod, ...etc.

amm... I don't have any restaurant recommendation now. Most of the restaurants I like are very small with limited menu, own (or partly own) by the chef. Usually service isn't the best/fast (not a must for me) and I had problem recommending them to my own friends. So... I guess I don't risk upsetting my fellow lyk here..

o... ACC-HE, if you are feeling adventurous, you can try out "Bo Laksa King". It's a take out place in a convenience store near Joyce sky train station. I've only tried their Laksa once and I liked it. I heard their Roti is good too but I was too full to try anything other than the Laksa. I don't live near there so it's hard for me to find time to go.
I've been cooking more at home lately.
I talked to Bo's wife and she's really nice. I do feel that they have heart to make their little restaurant better.

Just tried for lunch, not bad~ However, just too weird to sit there and eat, facing the fridge.

The woman is Shanghainese and the husband is the cook, he's from... can't remember, some country in SE Asia I guess.  We chatted a little, they were ok friendly (no other customer).

The raw sweet onion slices and other stuff made the noodle overall quite crunchy.  The fresh lime (commonly used in Pho) together with the onion slices made it more refreshing.  The soup is complex with spices, MSG is minimal, not made from soup mix I think, more like from.. their own made curry sauce.  Whole hard boil egg, some pieces of chicken, 1 or 2 shrimps.

Taste good, but not out of ordinary good.  Opened for half a year.... wish them all the best... I would likely not return.

I really like the soup base, it has the spice and herbs and fragrant. (to be honest, I never care for the meat or ingrediant in my noodle soup... only the soup base and the noodle itself... and bean sprouts!!)
Mrs. Bo told me that Laksa soup base is not really hard to make but most restaurants don't put all the herbs and spices to it because not all customers like them there.
I will ask them to make it "original" spicy next time. (they usually tone down the spiciness)

I acutally felt comfortable eating and chatting with Mrs. Bo last time. My next item to try is their Roti. But I have to bring my Panda with me. (so I can still eat both Laksa and the roti)
