Do you guys think I will get taxed if I buy $195USD worth of products from the States by shipping with USPS?

brokerage fee: no.

will they tax me just 12%? or it could be lower or higher?

thanks thanks

Depends on what your thing is. If it is a duty-free item, then it's just PST & GST. If it is subjected to duty, then you gotta pay that as well.

Shipping anything from the US into Canada via any method is not gonna be cheap. In this case, I'd just have the item shipped to Point Roberts and go pick it up on a Saturday or something. Can buy some cheap gas while I'm down there as well.

Yea, picking up there = I will shop around there and get some cheap gas too.

You can either hide and lie, then no tax.

Or be honest and show them invoice and, depends on that custom's mood, and how hot / handsome you are, you'll be taxed or not taxed.

Thanks... how is shipping to Point Roberts work? Do I have to pay service fees AND Package Receiving Fees (ie. $3.xx per package received for you) ?

One additional thing with shipping USPS is, you need to sign an authorization form to have the agent (shipping depot) receive the item on your behalf before the item is received.

For parcels shipped within US, UPS ground can sometimes be cheaper than USPS, and it is almost always faster too.

If you do ship to Point Roberts, and the shipment worth $195 ..try to get another friend to go with you...then more likely no tax.

Lik, how/ where do I get that authorization form?

Fibbi, I never go down there on my own, the more people the better. Each time I shop in the States, I never get taxed when I come back on the same day... I guess I am just lucky. So, do I have to inform "The Letter Carrier" at Point Roberts before I ship my stuff to there?

The email registration is only for registration with the mailing depot. It is not the authorization you give to USPS to deliver parcels to the depot as your agent. For that particular form, you need to do it in person and sign the form, giving them your signature. Otherwise, the mail depot can't receive the parcel for you from USPS.

fibbi, but you didn't have to sign any forms in order to receive, right?

really? so I can't have them to send me the stuff?

I think very likely the company will be using the standard shipping method instead of USPS.

tax ..   for sure .. unless the make mistake ..

duty ..  depends ..  again, they can make mistake ..

brokage ..   I think so .. but should be little ..  may be $7? ( handling fee )

Anyway, something selling for $200 US, probably $300 here ...

my stuffs sent to point roberts by usps before, and i didn't need to sign any authorized form?
Is it only for something really expensive?

if you are picking it up at point roberts, to bring a friend or not doesn't really make a difference, because you just spend an hour over there, custom knows why you are there, unless you are also spend a day to watch whale

Agreed with tofu, i go there all the time and last time two of us went and we only pick up 120 worth of stuff and still get taxed.

also i have been receiving usps mail at TSB shipping for quite a few years and never need to sign any authorization form.

I never need to sign any form when I get package from Point Roberts. The shipping method the seller use is USPS.

Well...depends on "luck" I guess...the most expensive package I pick up is $150US. 2 people in the car...never taxed...
But even tax..my stuff would be only GST PST...coz they are made in US!

Strange to hear that USPS will pass the parcel on to TSB without the authorization form being signed since the TSB staff specifically told me that they couldn't accept USPS stuff unless I signed the form.

I suppose the policy is still technically in place, but at the execution level, people stopped bothering with it anymore.

I am thinking it's because it's so 'obvious' that buyers are using a USA address to receive their packages and I guess USPS can tell =P

well, mine's going to be 184.84 USD worth of stuff =) I don't even really mind if they end up taxing me because it's still much much cheaper to buy it online! =)

I guess depend on the shipping method? If it's like UPS/Fed Ex shipping then the person is supposed to "sign". So you need to authorize the post office to colllect your stuff?
But my seller is using USPS...so less restriction I guess.

With UPS, they leave my package outside of the house and go..... no signatures required

I bought a portable propane BBQ, cost USD$190 and I am prepared to get taxed when I pick it up at Point Roberts.

I go there all the time, I wouldn't want to save a few $$$ and mess up my clean record to the US.

You can ship stuff to The Letter Carrier and you never have to register or authorize them.

Yeah...I show the receipt to custom every time. Not worth to mess up with custom...

Yea, i show my receipts every time and they just let me go.

have you guys tried this one:
http://mbistore.com/

I wonder why this one would charge a $10 registration fee?

No idea, just like many fitness gym, they charge for registration fee.

I just picked up my $190 BBQ, line up is like 45 min, the officer checked my trunk and let me go, tax free.

if i use letter carrier, i should type the shipping address same as the billing address by using 145 Tyee Drive, Point Roberts?

Billing address is your address for your credit card company, it has to be Canadian.

Shipping address is the one in TLC.

Philip
