The Harmonized Sales Tax takes effect in BC. The Provincial Sales Tax (PST) joins the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for a rate of 12%. Drivers will also be paying 4.8 cents a litre more in added carbon tax.

gas is exempt from this tax and the carbon tax is already silently added to us months ago. Didn't you see the price of future oil is around 75 dollars for quite some time and the gas price never drops. Those who line up on 30 June is stupid. Do you really believe gas company will start to add the carbon tax on 1st July?

I only fill up when I see the price is lower on that day. On Jun 30 it's actually 113.0 which is pretty low these days.
I did fill up in Point Roberts once a while even months ago.

twenty mins @ 90Km/hr = 30km which means about 3 liters of gas if your car is about 10Km/liter. If your car is so fuel efficient. let say only 2 liters for 30 Km. You have to save more than 2 dollars for a single trip. If you have to come back from Pt Roberts, another 30Km. You do the math

回復 9# sheep

Of course I did the math.
One way = 20KM, so total of 40KM.
So assume gas required is $4.
Gas down there is around $0.30 difference. (9x.9 vs 12x.9 here - both supreme). It's almost 30% difference. Let's say I fill up 50L, I can save at least $15, minus my $4 gas to get there, still save around $10 each tank.

ice cream is not basic grocery, so it is subject to taxes.  the $20 limit is only apply to basic groceries, which are eggs, milk and.... plus that supermarket really marks up the price.  if you add the state tax and exchange rate, sometimes it is better off to buy here.  especially the milk, walmart has better price.
if you smoke, you are only allow to take back one opened package.  the rest are subject to tax.

Ice cream and similar products
Sch. VI, Part III, para 1(k)
74. A supply of ice cream, ice milk, sherbet, frozen yoghurt or frozen pudding, non-dairy substitutes for any of the foregoing, or any product that contains any of the foregoing, when packaged or sold in single servings, is taxable.
75. Examples of ice cream and similar products that are taxable, when packaged or sold in single servings, include:
• ice cream sandwiches
• ice cream bars
• tofu-based frozen snacks
• frozen yoghurt bars
----
so a box of ice cream is not taxable since it isn't single servings, but an ice cream bar is taxable since it is single serving.  So confusing.

Colin Hansen: HST comes with new tax credit and income tax relief By Staff

The following is an unsolicited letter on the HST from B.C. finance minister Colin Hansen that was sent to the Georgia Straight:
May 28, 2010
The Editor
We know introducing the Harmonized Sales Tax on July 1 will benefitB.C.’s economy and, at the same time, we recognize there will beadditional tax on some products and services.
That’s why we’re providing a B.C. HST Credit that will be paidquarterly to over 1.1 million low- and modest-income BritishColumbians. The annual credit will be $230 per family member forfamilies with incomes up to $25,000 and individuals with incomes up to$20,000. Individuals and families with incomes above these thresholdsmay be eligible for a partial benefit, for example, a family of fourwith income between $25,000 and $48,000 will receive a partial credit.Eligible British Columbians will receive the first HST credit paymentin early July, along with the BC Low Income Climate Action Tax Creditand the GST credit.
We are also providing income tax relief by increasing the basicpersonal amount tax credit to $11,000. This means up to $80 back in thepockets of individuals and up to $160 for those claiming spousalcredits. People earning up to $18,800 generally pay no provincialpersonal income tax. British Columbia has the lowest provincial incometaxes in Canada for individuals earning up to $118,000.
