Since Gregor Robertson is hyping us to be one of the greenest city by 2020, I would like to spark some awareness through going Green.

Things we can do:

Composting

Start a compost, not only yard trimming, get a compost bin through vancouver.ca. Throw all our organic garbage in there, banana peels, etc etc etc

Rain Barrels

Connect rain barrel to your storm drain.

Beekeeping

Cultivating bees in your garden can be fun, you can yield up to 200lbs of honey through a single honeybee hive.

Cycling

Gonna brag a bit, I am planning to buy a Valencia Trek bike to be my summer transportation.

Chicken Coop

Since Vancouver just allowed chicken raising, why not own a few chicken to off-set the costs of going to supermarket?

Okay, enough of my ideas and rambling, these are my plans for the next year, what are yours?
作者: 布小熊    時間: 2010-7-15 09:39

Since I live in an apartment and don't really want to have warm composting, I will start collecting and bringing organic garbage to my parents' place for composting.
They have been doing that for years with good fertilizer for their garden.
I guess the next thing i can do is cycling/walking. And I will do that more.

To speed the process, you can by red worms from local pet store to bring the composting time down to 2-3 months.

I am not suprised many chinese people are not interested in this thread, but as a Chinese in a foreign country, we are actually the future leaders of the world in terms of power and knowledge. We do not have the power in which government and other institution has, but i hope many chinese people in this little online community can influence others to do some environmental work. I was back in Asia last month, and it hurts me to see the degree of pollution affecting the lives of so many people. It is really time to change our lifestyle to be more sustainable. Being green is not some hippie **** anymore, it's about saving the world from destruction in your own hands.

In China, they are building solar power, wind power, highspeed railway, subway etc. These are all designed to reduce pollution and to reduce the reliance on cars.
Shame on Canadians and Americans who drive their cars way too much every day.

China is now the leader in green revolution. Why don't you read some of my threads on China's green revolution?

Yes, china is doing it's share in the green revolution. its true, there is no doubt about it.  But on this delicate subject, its not the question who is doing what, rather its how come we are not doing more. China has 1.5 billion people, neighboring India has 1 billion people. This global warming pollution problem is not going to go away after one night, economic growth and population growth will just add more salt to the wound.  The American and Canadian lifestyle is not sustainable at all, our footprint on earth is about 4 times the size of a normal Chinese peasant in China.  The problem with the Chinese culture is, we have this inferiority complex, our inferiority complex allows us to accumulate lots of wealth through hard work and labor. After wealth what happens? leave it for the next generation to waste it away of LV, fly cars and things of the materialistic nature. Evidence of that all around you today, all these Chinese businessmen bringing kids from overseas to gain knowledge. They be taking all these business administration, economic classes? What else do they learn other than doing good business and accumulating wealth?

The extravagant lifestyle of Euro, Canada and America.

This is the major problem!  We keep thinking their culture is better than ours. The endless partying, the entertainment and the high life. How long is this gonna last until every inch of the earth's resource is stripped away through our extravagance?

I was raised in Vancouver, came here since I was 7, back in the day, there was no need to wear t-shirts in the summer due to the cold, that was only 15 years ago. What do y'all think we happen to the next generation?

hahaha, that is why the Chinese should buy their own brand names Chinese hand bags and Chinese luxury cars, so that the money stays in China.

From what I can see in North America, there are many Chinese scholars and students doing research in the areas of biological sciences, medicine, various types of engineering etc, not only business administration.

Plan on turning front yard lawn in to a vegetable garden in the next couple years.

Erased my urge to buy a new car, my vision is to phase out my personal use of automobile in the next five years. If I cannot, buy a hybrid. I personally think each family should be limited to one car.

There are many Community-support Agriculture groups out there, they help fund turning back and front yard lawn into a vegetable garden.

Am I the only green LYK here? saving humanity is never too late, it can be fun too. My experience biking for commute is so different than through automobile. Yes, its more time consuming, but its also good exercise, can smell the streets and the sweet vancouver air. Cruise around the neighborhood, check out nice houses.  Recently I saw my Chinese Neigbor install solar panels on the roof of his house, not really cost efficient for Vancouver, but seems like the right thing to do.

Biking is not really low carbon, yes, I am not burning petroleum, but I still end up eating more food due to more exercise. Where does all the food come from? Petrochemical fertilizers. There could be a low carbon lifestyle, I think though, we are at a time of crisis where there is a huge population overshoot in the world. I am starting to think war is good, kill some people off to release the tension of the lands as well as human vs human conflicts. am i crazy? hahaha

We are at a point where governmental policy is probably not enough, the problem is the growth of the Chinese economy allows the wealthy Chinese citizens to imitate our lifestyle, the western extravagant lifestyle, which in turns raises the carbon footprint per capita. I only hope China and India goes to war, nuclear Armageddon for Asia, very unlikely.

Hi, I will post some pics later. I made a rabbit run, so they can eat outside in the grass lawns.

Here is some garbage waste and composting tips, since we do composting in our backyard, there is significantly less garbage in the garbage bins and the green bins. So we called up the City hall to order us a 75L Green bin and 75L Garbage bin, its tiny, and more economical. We pay less taxes now.

作者: Ovaltine    時間: 2013-7-20 20:53

Its a problem everywhere in Vancouver, we stopped raising chickens because of this, chickens are kinda dirty, their poop is everywhere...Gonna get cat in the near future.

Here is an interesting family from Cali, they don't work, just farm at the home, and they grow enough food for an adult family of 4 with 20,000 profit every year.
