Can someone advise me on how to choose tripods?
What are the differences between the expensive ones (over $100) and the less expensive ones (less than $100)? and I probably don't want to spend too much money on a tripod......just that the one I have is too light and it is not going to be able to hold heavier lenses +_+

It really depends on how you are going to use the tripod. If you are carrying it often, the lighter the better.

Within the price tag of CAD100 (for tripod that could hold < 5 lbs) you will be getting a pretty good tripod if you are not too picky on brand name. Sometime there will be special offer in London Drugs. You can try them out and pick the one you want.

I don't use it very often
usually only for 合照

within 5lbs should be enough since my camera body is not that heavy
london drugs? sure I wll check it out sometime, thanks
what about bestbuy, futureshop, and broadway camera?

I am wondering, how come the professional ones are like $300+?

For tripod that's over CAD 300, most of them are being made of carbon fibre which is quite a bit lighter compare to aluminum one.

For sure you can check in Broadway Camera. They have the tripod demos showing in the store also. Sometime they do have promotion on tripod. However, it's mostly for pro style.

P.S. - For Bestbuy and Future Shop, they may have better deal on the camera body (common model). But it definitely doesn't work for tripod...

pro style means.... eg.

5 way pan head, fine tune ball socket head, levelling, multi-adjustable legs... etc. Do you think you really need it right now?

For me, I only use it for" 1, 2, 3,... say cheese..., Done! Everyone dismiss..."

P.S. - Having a tripod with a ball socket head that comes with a removable plate is pretty handy on special occasion.

I think it can mean "it would take u much faster to unmount the camera from the tripod, instead of spending minutes on that..."

a few suggestions

1. what is your budget? i.e. $100, $150, $200
2. what camera and lens (heaviest) will you be using? this gives an idea of the weight the tripod needs to support
3. how will you be carrying the tripod? if you are going to have a car, you don't necessarily need to get a carbon fiber tripod. However, if you will be travelling a lot (i.e. take a plane to another country), you would want a carbon fiber tripod

as lo_pak mentioned already, you want a ball head with a quick release (removable) plate.

some brand suggestion
Chinese Brand: Benro and/or Induro - they imitate famous (read: expensive) brands but are supposed to be good

Italian Brand: Manfrotto and/or Gitzo - I believe they are the same company now with Manfrotto being more of the budget brand and Gitzo being the high end one.

As far as I know, Broadway Camera (in Richmond) is your best bet for seeing these tripods in person. Best Buy/Futureshop don't carry good tripods.

1. I am hoping to get this done within $100
2. It's a 400D and 17-40 (Yes, I couldn't resist to get another lens at last.......LOL.....Don't think I will use it with my 70-200 since I don't even have the lens ring...) so 3kg will do
3. It will be in my car. I don't travel a lot (but do want to bring it if I do go travelling)

I guess I will go with the chinese brand then, as I am no professional and not going to use a tripod professionally....lol

Not an expert on tripod but generally a good tripod can do the following things:

1) Support your camera! - think about it, you spent hundreds or thousands on your camera and lenses, do you want to rely it on a cheap/fragile tripod? Your tripod should support the whole weight of your camera against strong wind or slight bump/hit, if your tripod flips, your camera + lens are history.

2) Portability - Tripods are not only for group photos, it is for travel and landscape photos too, you can put it in your trunk but many times you want to carry it around too, so a light tripod can save your shoulder.

3) ease to use - a well designed tripod can be set up / collapsed in seconds, coz if you spent most of your day setting up your tripod, you don't want to bring it out ever again.

4) Stability & Fine tune adjustment - ok, you got your camera aligned to the horizon perfectly, you tighten your tripod head and you let go your camera, it tilted! Then you spend 1 min just to guess how to adjust it then you have to do it all again after you moved to another location, then you'll know how important built quality & fine tune adjustment is for a tripod.

5) Reach - not very important but some tripods can tilt horizontally or let you mount your camera upside down for macro shoots.

A good tripod can last forever, you don't need a gitzo but don't go cheap on tripods, I won't suggest anything less than $100 in retail for a dslr, you can get a used one on CL then sell it later if you need a better one. Manfrotto, Slik, Giotto are some of the good brands to trust.

well, I just bought a benro in HK for a little less than HKD$1000, not a carbon fiber but I think it is strong and steady enough for my camera, one bonus thing of my tripod is one of the legs can be detached to become a monopod! If you're going back to HK, remember to check them out too.

If you don't mind me stealing this thread, I like to find out more about tripod as well.
I am researching on Tripod too. I am hoping to buy a china brand or real brand carbon fibre one in Hong Kong. (~Oct)
I have diff needs compare to 嘉嘉's tho.
Most likely use it for taking night shots, birds, cars, and whereever I need longer exposure for the shot. I don't like shooting pictures of people and not even group photos...

I do travel and I need a light weight one. I planned to get the "head" for easy mounting and unmounting.

My camera is light (Pentax K-x) but I do plan to use the longer lense (55-300) with the tripod.

I do prefer to get mine under $300...

I bought C-069M8 before my Japan trip. Carried it all around Tokyo, on subway and walked tons with it. It's probably the lightest and smallest CF tripod one can find that still opens up to nearly as tall as a Manfrotto 190. Let's put it that way, my 40D + 17-55 is definately heavier than the tripod, imagine that. Some might say 5 section skinny legs with a sucky ball head won't cut it for DSLRs. I personally think it's okay given how small and light it is. With a pricet tag under 1800 HKD ball head included, I'm very satisfied. If I have extra cash later I might replace the ball head, but for now, I'm happy with what I got.

This guy is basically a rip off of the Gitzo GT-1550T, which retails for $700 USD. I played around with it myself, the Gitzo is definately more solid, but slightly bulkier and heavier despite both having 5 section legs. The twist locks of the GT-1550T requires only a single quarter turn and it give a very positive lock and unlock. The Benro will require at least two twist actions. For less than 1/3rd the price tho, Benro hands down!

Right now I'm using a Velbon Sherpa 435. I've tried putting my 40D with grip on a 70-200 lens and it's still rigid.

If you are in need of the tripod, Broadway Camera is having the Velbon Sherpa 200R on sale for CAD95.00. I think this model is a pretty decent one that fits your budget.

"quick" plate one are more expensive .. (slide in and out)

But those with a smaller plate, (clip in) are not that expensive.

You don't need a heavy duty one, so metal tripod is ok, dont need carbon.

My favourite tripod is still my 20 yr old broken Cullmann one .. ^_^

I actually also went to london drugs today to check on the tripods
they have 2 velbon's that are in $89. One looks a bit more stylish, lighter (1.3kg), holds 2kg. The other one is a bit bigger, heavier (1.49kg), and holds 3kg

I was about to buy the lighter one
but my friend said I can always wait till it goes on sale cuz he said london drugs sometimes have very very good deal

2KG should be ok .. but to be safe, buy the 3KG one la, unless you need to put your tripod in/on your backback .. otherwise, a bit extra weight is ok, at the end of the day, I rarely use those carbon tripod, not much different in weight IMO, and I ususually just throw my tripod to trunk anyway...

$1780 is 公價. I think they got the price on benro.hk. So hard to get cheated. Any lower than that is based on your bargaining ba. But even $1780 is an awesome price. If you go to eBay $300 USD flat is the going price for the C-069.

However, not too many carbon tripod in stock .. they are popular in HK (travel size) I bought few metal tripod/mono pod there ... (not much weight different on small size tripod)

Too bad, every time I go FU LAY, different staffs .. LOL

Yes, the CF version is only about 20% lighter. But comparing the other specs between the A-069 and the C-069, the C-069 is rated for more than double the loading weight, and closes down to under 10% smaller, while loosing only 3mm on the opened size. When travelling, sometimes every ounce counts.

Of course, the A-069 is less than half the price... (under $800 HKD... even within 嘉嘉's budget)...

I bought the A1681 + B-0 Combo at 旺角星際 for $1200. It is not carbon but is still pretty light, one of the legs of the tripod can be detached as a monopod and I think it is a very good feature.

Putting weight on the hook will exceed the loading capacity very quickly. It doesn't contribute to the stability if it's starting to get too heavy for the joints and the leg tubes.

I came back and I got SICK in HK.... I was too tired to go to 鴨寮街 alone. So on my last shopping day, I finally forced myself out the door and grap a friend who doesn't know anything with photography (but she had the day off!).
We went to 旺角星際 and after walking through all the stores, I can only find A1681 and A1691 in one store (no sign of any C model at 星際 and no sign of Benro in any CWB or Wan Chai or Central malls ).
I ended up getting the A1681 + B-0 Combo for $1230.
I didn't get as many misc gears as I hoped to for this trip.

Yeah the A1681 is more heavy duty than I needed it. But that's the only thing I can find.

amazon has been using a pricing strategy where the price can change 70%-200% in a few days

another example

i got a toothbrush for $90 and less than a week later it was $69

I know .. from $90 to 69 ..  ~ 20% different, still reasonable, but $200 to $383 ..

I looked at that tripod before, (or similar) always close to $300 US (with head) which is not too bad compare to buying one from HK.

Just like buying in HK, vs buying in China, some price different too ..

For brand name tripot, such as Gitzo/manfrotto/cullmann etc, not much price different between here and Hong Kong, (~ 10-20%) so better buy local. (warranty and service is better too)

However, I still suggest Benro ..  great tripod for what you pay ..  just 1/2 to 1/3 price of brand name one.

but I found out the max load capacity is only 1kg Orz

yeah I think this one is more to be designed for DC.....

I actually tried loading all my stuff onto the tripod and it still stand
but I also decided to tell my bf about it and he doesn't want me to use that tripod either
so hopefully we can refund it if he can find the receipt.....

Flip lock is easlier and quicker to adjust....twist one...more popular....

If you want to carry it along with you more like daily, you shouldn't get a one which is relatively heavy. For example, tripod by itself 2kg, head 1kg, camera+lens+grip+flash 2.5kg...., what do you think?
Ball head is more like one-click action for easier and faster handling, yet classic 3-way head is good for individual pan/tilt action if horizontal and vertical levels are important/critical (better with bubble levels too). Flip lock is also design for easier and faster action, yet it might loosen over high usage and need tuning; twist action could be more secure and durable cuz you just need to hand tight it as much as you need to. Also depends on the style of the flip lock design, some are a little less obtrusive some are not, which twist style is usually more compact (no extra parts sticking out) for easier storage.
Max height is another issue to be considered. The higher it can go, the more expensive and the heavier it could be.
