This piece of news is a little old, as it is from 7/23/2010.
So I did some research on this. This is most likely news reporter's propaganda. You can always take a photo like this on a train that departs at 6 am in the morning. Even a subway train in Shanghai or Beijing can be nearly empty very early in the morning. But the thing is many people complained that they had to wait for up to two hours at Hongqiao airport hub to get a seat on the highspeed train during peak hours.

A train on the same route:

作者: Lik    時間: 2010-8-3 21:50

Old news? Heck, it's barely a week old, and you're calling it stale news already? And when you can't find any info on why there is only 1 passenger in the whole train, you just brush it off as "news propaganda".

Gotta love how our Big China Peter respond to any of these news articles that paint the Great Motherland in anything less than an optimal light!

You moron, I already said you can pick a particular carriage on a train very early in the morning. Very likely there will be few passengers.
These highspeed trains are packed during peak hours. Have you ever taken a highspeed train in China?

"有車廂只得1名旅客" What a stupid fool you are who can't even read? They said 有車廂 with 1 passenger.
Who said there was only 1 passenger on the whole train?

They are already doing that in China. Building schools, hospitals, and roads does not mean they should not build more railways which are now congested as there are so much passenger and freight traffic.
There are hundreds of millions of people who use these highspeed railways and also subway in China. These public transportation are aimed at reducing the reliance on cars and highways.
The Chinese highspeed railway system is putting the Americans to shame, hahaha.

In the US, this is fine since the top 5% of earners contribute 75% of taxes, so it makes sense for them to receive more benefits than those who never pay taxes in their lives.

Unfortunately this is not quite true.  We have way too many leechers.

The highspeed railway is a long term multi-decade plan for the hundreds of millions of people who can now avoid driving their cars. Just look at Japan and Europe, their highspeed railway is for the general people.

If you go to China you can see many of these highspeed trains are packed with people. We are talking about hundreds of millions of city people who can afford highspeed trains.
For those workers who cannot afford they can still use the older trains.
This highspeed train project will take decades to build and it will serve the country for decades more.
Highspeed trains are reducing air pollution and the reliance on cars.

Just look at Japan and Europe, they built their highspeed railway decades ago, when the income in Japan was still very low.

mcjohnjohn, I know how you feel. But now is totally different, with the new Beijing airport terminal 3 that opened right before the 2008 Olympics. The new building is stunning in design and twice the size of Hong Kong airport.

Of course, the newly expanded Shanghai Pudong and Honqiao airports and Guangzhou airports are also very modern and efficient.

wow, hahaha, 20-40% of China's population is already hundreds of millions of people. Don't you realized that? Besides, the highspeed railway project is designed to serve the country for decades to come, during which the people will become even richer so more people can afford.
For those people who cannot afford they can still use the older trains. This highspeed train project will take decades to build and it will serve the country for decades more. Highspeed trains are reducing air pollution and the reliance on cars.

Just look at Japan, they built their highspeed railway decades ago, when their income in Japan was still very low. The highspeed railway had positive impact on Japan's economy. The Koreans are also expanding their highspeed railway.
China has also signed agreements with Argentina to build their highspeed railway. Therefore, money can be made by selling railway technology to other countries.

You keep on claiming that there is no demand and only 20-40% of the people use it.
But if 30% of the people in China use highspeed train, that is already 400 million people. This number will increase over the next few decades as the highspeed railway project is designed to serve for decades.
Some people will use highspeed railway, some will drive themselves, some will take the plane and some will take the bus. Why can't you understand this?
Does everyone here take the skytrain?
