To all make-up pros and artists..please help..

I need to complete my shopping list for class and am looking for some advice on what to purchase. I get a student discount for Make Up For Ever, MAC, and Shoppers but am not limited to shopping at these stores. I would much prefer to purchase my items from the counters at the Bay. Please do share your recommendations.

I still need:

Thank you.

Are you learning to do makeup?   If you don't want to spend a fortune yet, most drugstore brands (Loreal, Revlon, Cover Girl) are good enough to work with.  Check out the very cheap Rimmel as well. They make good blushes and eye pencils. During Christmas time, Rimmel blushes went on sale. They were cheap to begin with and after sale... I think I bought three colors (peach, rose pink, peachy-rose) for like, $10? Use a good brush and you'll get good results.

Regarding the Smashbox O-glow blush, I am not sure if the would work if you are to use to to learn makeup because this blush is suppose to "do its own thing". It's supposed to magically read somethiing off your body and determine what color is for you and then itself into that color. I read some people find it great but some find it turns fuchsia on their cheeks...

Eye pencil: Rimmel, Shu, MAC
LIpstick:  I find Anna Sui lipstick (as welll as Shu Uemura) a bit sheer to work with.
Lip pencil: MAC
Eyelash curler: Would you be interested in buying a Shu curler off me? The refill pad is included. I bought it 3 weeks ago and have used it very few times, But I find my good old Shiseido suits my eye shape better.

Is the quality of the 88 eyeshadow palette good? Pigmented? Easy to glide on?

thanks for the tips! i am taking a basic make-up course right now but if i choose to continue on, i will need to purchase more expensive products. can someone tell me where i can find shu uemura? i haven't taken a look at the curlers yet, but if i will buy the shu one, i'll let you know. thanks!

Also, can you guys also share what your make-up kit consists?

作者: siuyudim    時間: 2008-2-8 00:48

i go to VCC in downtown.

any recommendations for a lipstick?
作者: Rainy    時間: 2008-2-8 14:46

siuyudim, what is the program call @ vcc... I may interest in taking such course too
作者: siuyudim    時間: 2008-2-8 16:27

it is called "Make Up Artistry"...if there is enough enrollment, there will be levels 1 to 6. my instructor is also the program coordinator, she's fun...you can look up www.nadiaalbano.com to find more info about her.

3 blush colours (pink, peach, rosier colour):  I sugguest Pinch O' Peach from MAC, it is a peachy pink colour.  Another I suggest would be Orgasm from NARS, it is a beautiful healthy soft peach colour.

eyelash curler...shiseido or shu uemura?:  I have both, but I like Shu Uemura over Shiseido one.

metal palette:  I got mine from Shu Uemura in Hong Kong.  I don't know if the one in Holt carries it, you can make a call and ask before you go.

shadow case, refill eye shadow...i already have an 88 colour palette, i think it will do?:  if you think you need more, MAC on Robson has many different shadow case and eye shadow refill.

siuyudim, thanks for your info..

the price of the program seems reasonable le =P do they require you to buy brand name products to start with? or it's ur preference?
作者: siuyudim    時間: 2008-2-11 00:19

i already bought the multiple orgasm from Nars.... i have a dumb question, how do you apply it? do you put it on directly on your face and blend with brush, or use fingers?

i went and bought the shiseido curler... i'm very impressed with it. i had a cheap cheap revlon one and i definitely notice the difference right away!

i also bought 2 lipsticks (1 sheer, 1 velvet), and 1 lipgloss from anna sui... i haven't used the velvet one yet, hope i will like it.

i can't wait to add more to my collection... make-up is getting really expensive... sigh..

Did you get The Multiple Orgasm instead of Orgasm (pressed powder blush)?
How do you like it? You can apply it directly onto your face and blend or on your finger first then apply to face and blend.
作者: siuyudim    時間: 2008-2-11 12:04

i got the multiple instead of just the pressed powder blush, it goes on smoothly. i think it's considered a cream blush because it turns into more of a powder texture when it's on the face. applying it directly on my face is not a problem but i'm having a hard time with the idea of ruining the stick with a spatula when applying on someone else.

rainy: in the beginning (fall 2007), they required students to purchase a kit from Make Up For Ever for about $450, but there was an additional list of products you still need to purchase on top...this resulted in not have enough students to run the course. so this spring, the course is offered again and students can purchase the required products in whatever brand they like. however, if you continue with the course...you cannot just go and purchase drugstore brands. i spent several hundred dollars already but still do not have everything i need...it's quite of an investment but is nothing compared to the brand name make-up schools.
作者: Rainy    時間: 2008-2-11 16:46

siuyudim, thanks for your info! I was reading the program description on the vcc website and it says that students are required to purchase a make up box and bushes ($130) the first day of class.... etc

For this spring (your class), you can purchase whichever brands/ or they still require you to purchase  certain brands for certain items? It's an investment for sure.. but I know some other make-up schools are 10x more expensive le.....

What's the discounts you get from Make up For Ever, Shoppers, and MAC?
作者: siuyudim    時間: 2008-2-11 17:59

i bought the brushes and train case from the person the instructor brought in, you are not required to purchase from them but i did because it is much more convenient...main reason is because it was a heck of a deal. the brushes are professional but are not branded. if i bought branded ones, it could easily cost me $500.

the discount i get is 20% off, and i believe it's 40% off the first time at mac? i don't remember...i haven't used any of the discounts yet because i am restricted to purchase from the downtown stores which i do not want to do.

for those who use make-up brushes? do you use brush-cleaner or just shampoo?
作者: Alcoholic    時間: 2008-2-11 19:24

i have Cinema Secret brush cleaner (from Act 1), and other times i just use shampoo...
作者: Rainy    時間: 2008-2-11 19:30

siuyudim: thanks again.... I guess I will have to wait till the coming fall/spring for that course =)

i just totaled my receipts and I've spent $850.37 so far!!! $400 plus was from today alone. I was excited then but now I am so sad.

I even bought the YSL French Manicure pens one have you have mentioned, I will try it shortly after this post. (LYK is dangerous to my wallet when it comes to reading all the good stuff you guys share..)

I bought the eye pencils from MAC, the O-glow and Smashbox Photo Finish Primer's from SDM, and a ton from Make Up For Ever. I just noticed I got double charged for a palette when I got home. Hope they will credit me back. I already left a voice message on their machine.

since you're buying so much
you should consider going down to the states and buy them there instead?
作者: 草莓妹妹    時間: 2008-4-9 19:12

I'm also looking for Cinema Secret Brush Cleaner.
A makeup artist from Taiwan's show,《女人我最大》, also recommended this Brush Cleaner too.
I really want to try it.  So, where in Vancouver can I purchase that?
Thank you!
