之前喺另外一個discussion提過一個sample grocery list (for 2 people),好多都覺得唔可行,不如喺度繼續討論啦。
Sample grocery shopping list (1 week supply):
pre-slice meat about $4/pack. (1 pack per day) $28
3 onion  $2
3-4 tomato $2
bean sprout $1
Veggie (3 pack) from T&T (half pack per day) $7
Fruit (e.g. 7 orange ~$5)
bread $3
total: $48
the remaining $2 is for "柴米油鹽"

Bread is actually for breakfast, lunch I have left over from dinner the day before.
For fruit, $5 can actually get you more oranges if it's small one. Assume $0.69/lb, medium size orange is about 0.6-0.7lb. So $5 can get you 10-12 oranges.

Some people mention "soup". One 火炭牌青紅蘿蔔湯 pack is about $6.99. It's good enough for 3-4 days for the two of us. Of course, if the soup is fancy with whole chicken, pig bones, then it's different. But I consider those soup pack pretty decent.

For meat budget ($4/day) I am giving it rather generous. If I buy lean ground pork, it's $3.99/lb and usually cook 0.5lb per day, even cheaper.

One week sample grocery list 2 (for 2 people):
pre-slice meat about $4/pack. (1 pack per day) $28
3 Onion $2
Mushroom $3
Fruit $5
Veggie $7
Bread $3
Total $48
the remaining $2 is for "柴米油鹽"

we eat steak maybe once per month, that is already $12 a day from safeway (about $6 per piece of prime rib)
live tilapia fish cost about $10 too.
you are already not going out to eat, and u cannot eat some higher quality food at home?

also if u add the soup $6.99 for 3~4 days. u are already over 50.

$50 seems impossible for us.

I rarely eat beef now. And I don't like steak that much. I do buy a slice of fish once a while, that would trade off other meat budget so probably just had luncheon meat that day w/ the fish.
The soup budget comes from veggie (because the I would eat the veggie there as well, example of carrot soup), and the meat from the veggie.
Sometimes I bought fish paste (鯪魚漿), that makes soup w/ 節瓜 as well.

My grocery shopping pattern is similar to yours.  More veggie, more fruit, less meat, some fish paste, no beef.  I shop veggie in Aberdeen and the rest in Yaohan.  Most probably, I shop on Fri after work or Sat afternoon.  And, I check the T & T website before going to Yaohan.

See you there!

I think veggies and fruits are generally cheap at any asian market. I usually will go to Costco or Superstore to get a bulk pack of meat (chicken, pork, etc) and freeze them into small packages and eat it for like...2 weeks. Even better I have friends who recommended me to marinate the meat before freezing them so when you thaw them for cooking it is already pre-marinated.

I have no intention to argue,
it is fact that they outsources for part of their products,

Or ask Pine House.
They do all the cake decorating on site thou.
The problem is: different store uses different sub-contractors,
therefore the consistency is not stable

T & T has the centre kitchen and bakery in the head office, mainly for certain items.  Some bakeries, such as 油條 are outsource from different suppliers.

Those birthday cakes are baked in-store.  Those sold in Yaohan are baked in the bakeries which is across its parking lot.  You will see those cakes are brought from there back to Yaohan by carts from time to time.

Their cakes (including birthday cakes) and bread (including pineapple buns etc) are all made by themselves.
Even Safeway, Save On, Superstore outsourced some of their bakery products.

I stated clearly that they  outsource for part of their products
and they use Pine House as their back up supplier.
I also said that there is nothing wrong with outsourcing, it is business goal  to maximize profit.
their problem is quality control for the products they bring in,
and the sanitation issue.
I did not say they outsource any birthday cake, but certain  bread and pastries, especially chinese pastries.
作者: KittyLeung74    時間: 2010-10-8 16:27

i don't know.. every time I go into a grocery store... I come out with $30 -$50 bill. (T&T, Yaohan, Supermarket 2000...etc)
Costco.. > $100 usually...
I never calculate how much I spent for grocery shopping but... I usually go to Wholefoods once a week or every two week to get some organic apples (I can only eat organic ones... I am allergic to regular apples ) and some items on sale. Bill usually is $15.

Then I have paid $250 for vegetables for a summer's supply of western vegetables that's like $40 a month.

So roughly, my grocery bill a month is like $30 + $50x4 + $100 + $40 for 2ppl => $370
And sometimes I go grocery shopping more than once a week as well.. (after work during the week)

This doesn't include things you guys talk about (e.g. rice - usually get 1 bag every 3 or 4 months and we likes rice from Thailand) and I seldom get seafood cos it's usually expensive to get them. some how my bf said he doesn't feel full after eating seafood, so I have to prepare extra dish of meat if I cook seafood.

some of them do taste different!!!
Like I got a mini watermelon when it was on sale and the colour looked a bit less red than those we get at regular grocery stores. But it taste so much better! Less sugary kind of sweet but it's still sweet... Almost like what I remember how they tasted like when I was a kid. very "ching" kind of sweet.

for me, I believe more on fresh and local then organic or not.
I am still looking for local/organic farms that sells Asian veggies in the summer. After tasting some SUPER sweet siu choi (napa cabbage) and bak choi from my farmer last summer. This year, he didn't grown any Asian veggies...

My sister in law grows variety of Chinese vegetables,
they are so good even they are not certified organic.
Red In-Choy, Green In-Choy, Watercress, Holy Basils,
A-Choy (Bitter Mak Choy),  Yau-Choy, Mo-Gua, Gogi Green.....
Too bad  harvesting season is short

keep in mind that our expense does not include rent yet.

anyways, before we have kids, our visa bill usually is less than 1k.
now with this little kid, its already 0.7k more, which is quite a lot to us already.

fyi, i paid $10 for internet, you have to call and ask for promo.
i paid $60 for two mobile phone, u have to call to get better deal or get some EPP pricing.

grocery is a thing that we have been try to save long time.
we buy only whats necessary, and also shop for stuff thats on sale. when I look at my tnt receipt, 90% of the item we buy are with (sale) on it.

thats why I was quite amazed by fibi's budget too.
