What will a new line to UBC look like?
And how far will it go?

Be the first to Comment  3 Recommendation(s) VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver is still squabbling over what type of technology to use for the UBC transit line. The options are SkyTrain technology, light rail, and rapid bus.

Meanwhile, UBC's Alma Mater Society is worried the proposed transit line will not even make it to the campus. It's concerned Vancouver city council will opt to 'phase-in' a subway project, that may only stretch to Granville or Arbutus Streets.

The society represents 46,000 students at the Point Grey campus. But the city says the university itself needs to get involved with the Metro Vancouver board if it wants to provide input on major regional projects.

Despite a pledge by the premier to help fund SkyTrain out to Langley, the City of Vancouver says more money has not been committed for the Broadway corridor project.

I think bus is pretty convininent to get to UBC...is there really a great need for other rapid transit? I doubt it...

I don't think bus is good enough. So many students/ staff commute to UBC everyday from the suburbs. Think about those people who travel from Surrey or Coquitlam. they have to take a bus to skytrain station, take the skytrain to commercial/ braodway and get on the bus to UBC. It can easily take 1.5 hours each way on GOOD days. If it rains/ snows, it'll take forever to get to campus...

That's why people choose to drive, and with all the buses adn cars on the road, the situation will only get worse.... i think they need skytrain/ underground to UBC. Imagine they loop the skytrain from Richmond to UBC and from UBC to either braodway/ downtown, this will save people a lot of time!

The rapid transit to UBC talking about here is from Broadway/Commercial to the campus. If I'm coming from Langley, I still need to take whatever bus/skytrain to Broadway/Commercial first. I don't see how's it's different from now except it would be faster, but how much faster we are talking about here...(from taking bus to say skytrain just from Broadway/Commercial to UBC campus). I'm not saying it's no good at all but I'd rather see the $ spending on expanding the rapid transit to more suburb area first. e.g. skytrain from port coquitnam to lougheed that would be nice...or Langley to surrey something like that.
Even the Gondola idea to SFU is more in priority than this one IMO.

Not only faster la.  It will also release some pressure on other bus routes too.
For example, the line that runs thru cambie street (forgot the name lol), there are lots of people taking skytrain getting off at 49th, 41st, King Edward, and Broadway and then go on bus.  There are always long line up at these bus stations at 6pm ish going opposite way of UBC.  Very often, the bus won't even stop at these bus stops b/c it is already full (possibly students going home).

And btw, the evergeen line will start very soon

Of course I"m not saying rapid transit to UBC is bad idea la...I also took bus to UBC before....Just that I"m wondering if other projects should take priority over this one lor.
Say in Langley..people almost have no choice but drive. The bus to Vancouver is not frequent and of course take long time la.
Even in SFU, since it snows so much, even you have a car, you may not be able to drive up the mountain. But the gondola idea is good that it won't be affected by snow.

The Gondola is a good idea, other than commuting,
it could be double as tourist attraction and bring in more revenue.
Too bad it is going to be a long wait before you can go on board.
