Richmond is trying to ban retail dog sale. Pet store owner is of coz unhappy. It is their business. They are saying children is losing a place to interact with puppies.

Do you think it is the right thing to do?

For me, I don't think living animals should be a  product that can be bought and sold.

even thought pet stores can sell pups
the children can 't react with those animals in the store cuz they can't touch anything but just watching

If the pet store is selling puppies from puppy mill, definitely ban that store.  Otherwise, no.  If people don't go to a pet store (good one) to buy their pets, they will go to other place, say craigslist.  People there "may" involve with puppy mill too.  Now could the City bans those pet selling???

I don't consider a pet as a product, but eventually when you want to bring a pet home, there will be money involve.  (not talking about adopting from SPCA)

I personally won't (and didn't) buy my puppies from pet stores because I feel that you really need to get to know the breeder before you can buy a puppy. I agree that having puppies in pet shop increases the chances of people doing "impulse puppy buying", which can lead to puppies being abandoned if the people who bought them were not ready (I lived with a girl once that bought a puppy from a pet shop, and gave it away in 3 months time?)

I don't know if banning the sale would really lower the number of puppy mills though....I really hope so!

It's the puppy mills should be banned. However, almost all puppies selling at pet stores are from puppy mills. Even puppies are not from puppy mills, it's the living environment of the pet stores not suitable for puppies. People shouldn't expect to buy a happy and healthy puppy from any pet store. I bought mine directly from a breeder.

Why are puppy mills so bad?

Are they like factory who just breed the dog to make money and not care about the dog's health and happiness?

Yes, often you hear about dogs that are locked up just for breeding purposes, and they have no freedom to exercise or even go outside. Their personality becomes very aggressive towards humans and other dogs. Often they have a lot of other health issues. When they are no longer in their prime breeding age they are discarded of.

I met a family who adopted a female Boston Terrier from a puppy mill. At the age of 2 (they think), she has already had litters of puppies. She has behavior issues and does not like to be with other dogs (especially male dogs). It is so sad to see because she still has such a long life ahead of her, yet she is already scared by previous events.

Support the ban if doggies r from puppy mills!

Maybe it should be banned if the source of their dogs are from puppy mills.

May this is just a dumb question, but why can't they just ban the puppy mills ??? I mean those big commercial puppy mills down in the state?  And let the SPCA have more power to catch those small puppy mills?

so they should ban the breeder as well?  but where can we get a pet?  so should they ban the golden fishes sale as well?

i think they should ban the puppy mill, but not the store.  since no one can guarantee the breeders or private sellers are good to the pet, so what are the difference.
"impulse puppy buying"? nowadays, a puppy at store costs $1000+, how many people can just walk in and get one.
i got mine from pet shop, he is happy and healthy now.

I guess what I mean is that it should not be as commercialized. We shouldn't see this in a shopping mall. Like adopting child, you don't do that in a shopping mall. I feel the animals in the mall are "products" to sell.

I don't know if this is possible. Just my thoughts. =)

I agree that puppy mills should be banned. Animals should not be breed for money purpose. such a bad idea.

They should ban the puppy mill.  Its just so bad that they are breeding dogs in such a bad environment, and their intention aren't good as well, there is no love nor care involved.

Good for you tofu! But you will be surprised at how many people will fork out the $1000 without understanding the consequences of owning a dog - needing to clean up after them, take them out for walks, train them, and actually spending time with them.

I'm not saying people who buy from pet stores are all irresponsible, I'm just saying people who take the time to find breeders and do research for the pets usually have a better understanding about the owning a pet.

yes
and usually breeders do not sell dogs to everyone
they will choose those that they think would be able to take good care of the dogs
this is what I like about breeders. Not 見錢開眼

When I was looking for my second sheltie
I contacted 2 local breeders and they both asked me write abit about myself and how I would take care of the dog if they were to sell a dog to me

The dogs at puppy mills often are dehydrated, hungry, and just kept being breed until they die. I hate those heartless human who take the lives of poor pets for money!
