SAN JOSE MINE, Chile -- A colossal Chinese-made crawler crane is standing ready at a copper mine in Chile Monday to bring out 33 miners trapped underground since early August.

The SCC4000-type crawler, made by China's Shanghai Sany group, will be used in the final rescue of the miners beginning as early as Wednesday, authorities confirmed.

A 624-meter deep rescue shaft was completed Saturday inside the San Jose Mine, in the middle of the northern Chilean desert, where 33 miners have been trapped 700 meters underground by a collapse since August 5.

Hao Heng, service manager of the Chilean branch of the Sany group, said the crane will be used to insert giant metal tubes to reinforce the rescue shaft before lifting out the miners in a special "capsule."

The Chinese engineer said once the complications inside the tunnel were overcome, the crane would work in perfection to save the miners.

The crane, which has a lifting capacity of 400 tons, arrived at the mine on six huge trucks Wednesday.

The crawler crane is equipped with state-of-the-art electric control and hydraulic systems, according to Yu Tianyu, who is from Sany group's market department.

Yu said there is now less than 10 400-ton crawler cranes in Chile and Chilean authorities finally chose Sany's crawler from among some world famous brands which also included Liebherr and Manitowoc for the final rescue.

The machine has the biggest lifting capacity among all the crawler cranes China has exported to South America, Yu added.

It is not the first time for the Sany crawler crane to be used in international rescue operations.

In 2008, the Britain-based Anderson Crane Hire used a SCC500D 50-ton Sany crawler crane to right a beached ferry listing on its side on shore.

The 6,000-ton ferry was stranded off the coast of Blackpool after it was struck by a freak wave on its journey from Northern Ireland to Britain's Heysham port.

don't tell me it is because of the expertise in saving minners.
Last year, our mother land has over 2,000 casualties in mine accidents.

It is the offical number that they release. Unofficial numbers???????

鳳凰 is a type of Phoenix.

nope.
Phoenix is from ancient Egyptian religion, spread out to middle east and as far as india.
Fenghuang and Phoenix represent different meaning.
Fenghuang is King of the all birds,
and Phoenix doesn't carry that.
While in Chile , they name the capsule "Phoenix" is more lean to the meaning of "rebirth".
It is a miss-translate so ppl mix them all up, also thx to 郭沫若.

The phoenix (Ancient Greek: Φοῖνιξ, phoínix, Persian: ققنوس, Arabic: العنقاء) is a mythical sacred firebird that can be found in the mythologies of the Persians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese, and (according to Sanchuniathon) Phoenicians.
A phoenix is a mythical bird that is a fire spirit with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. In some stories, the new phoenix embalms the ashes of its old self in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (literally "sun-city" in Greek). It is said that the bird's cry is that of a beautiful song. In very few stories they are able to change into people.
The Roman poet Ovid wrote the following about the phoenix:
Most beings spring from other individuals; but there is a certain kind which reproduces itself. The Assyrians call it the Phoenix. It does not live on fruit or flowers, but on frankincense and odoriferous gums. When it has lived five hundred years, it builds itself a nest in the branches of an oak, or on the top of a palm tree. In this it collects cinnamon, and spikenard, and myrrh, and of these materials builds a pile on which it deposits itself, and dying, breathes out its last breath amidst odors. From the body of the parent bird, a young Phoenix issues forth, destined to live as long a life as its predecessor. When this has grown up and gained sufficient strength, it lifts its nest from the tree (its own cradle and its parent's sepulchre), and carries it to the city of Heliopolis in Egypt, and deposits it in the temple of the Sun.
French author Voltaire thus described the phoenix:
It was of the size of an eagle, but its eyes were as mild and tender as those of the eagle are fierce and threatening. Its beak was the color of a rose, and seemed to resemble, in some measure, the beautiful mouth of Formosante. Its neck resembled all the colors of the rainbow, but more brilliant and lively. A thousand shades of gold glistened on its plumage. Its feet seemed a mixture of purple and silver; and the tail of those beautiful birds which were afterwards fixed to the car of Juno, did not come near the beauty of its tail.
