Now one UBC professor says he has solid numbers which prove the Olympic Line should be more than just an experiment. Eighty-two per cent of people who rode the line lived in Metro Vancouver with 18 per cent of them using it for work or school.
Lawrence Frank is the Bombardier Chairholder in Sustainable Transportation and believes the success of the experiment should fuel the downtown streetcar project.
"It can connect Stanley Park, Coal Harbour, the Convention Centre, Canada Place, Waterfront Station, the SeaBus, and Science World. You just go around and the Canada Line and then Granville Island," says Frank.
Two years ago a downtown streetcar line was estimated to cost $100 million.
